Strengthening Partnerships for a Cleaner, Greener Kenya.
The National Environmental Complaints Committee (@necc_kenya) and the Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (#KEPRO) held a strategic meeting to advance areas of collaboration under their existing Memorandum of Understanding (#MOU).
The discussions focused on joint initiatives to raise public awareness on sustainable waste management and promote responsible disposal practices among Kenyan citizens. #NECC CEO Mary Njogu emphasized the importance of driving behavior change to encourage proper waste segregation using color-coded bins, while KEPRO CEO James Odongo highlighted the need for strong partnerships among stakeholders to achieve shared sustainability goals.
The two organizations also expressed their intention to work closely with county governments to implement effective waste management programs and scale up impact across the country. In addition, NECC and KEPRO discussed collaborative ways to support the national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, reinforcing their shared commitment to environmental restoration and climate resilience.
Together, NECC and KEPRO reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Kenya.

Today, #KEPRO proudly represented Kenya at the #UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development, at a Plastic Circular Economy Exchange Program 2025, a post #TICAD9 event aimed at fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable industrial development across Africa.
As part of the program, #UNIDO convened a Plastic Circular Economy Business Plan Development Workshop, bringing together private companies, Producer Responsibility Organizations (PRO's), and industry associations from eight African countries: Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa to co- develop innovative circular economy business models in partnership with Japanese enterprises. Our programs assistant officer Faith Nzimbi held fort at this important forum highlighting the role of KEPRO in plastics management.
Together, we are shaping Africa’s transition towards a sustainable plastics future through collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility.

Today, #KEPRO participated in the Africa Food and Hospitality Week (AFMASS Food Manufacturing Expos) a high-level summit focused on shaping the future of sustainability across Africa’s manufacturing, hospitality, logistics, and packaging value chains.
Our CEO, James Odongo, contributed to Session 2 of Day 1, where he joined industry leaders to discuss Sustainability and the Circular Economy in Africa. In his remarks, James emphasized the urgent need to shift from a linear to a circular economy and underscored the critical role of consumer awareness and responsible waste disposal in advancing sustainable waste management.

Nairobi Street Food Festival Just Went Greener!
For the 6th edition of Nairobi Street Food Festival, #KEPRO added a sustainability twist, showcasing how the circular economy can be practical, local, and relatable. The main question was, how can we bring circular economy close to home and in a very relatable way?
To start, we continued the free distribution of compost made from food waste collected during the previous edition. Over 1,700+ kg of waste generated at the event was sorted at a licensed Material Recovery Facility (#MRF) managed by Tai Frontier and sent for recycling, ensuring a waste-free event. We also retained reusable fascia name banners for vendors, minimizing waste from repeated reprinting.
This edition, we introduced water stations and made the water free for those with water bottles, #KEPRO also brought in 3 partners in the recycling space:
✅ KIJANI TRIBE who make décor from used cement bags,
✅ Benard Works who makes charcoal briquettes which supports clean cooking,
✅ Greenshift4 Development who make boards from recycled PET which are used in making furniture, signages and board games.
Our goal is to make sustainability part of our daily life, support a zero waste future and responsible waste disposal.

Last week, #KEPRO partnered with Embrace Inclusion and YMCA Thika Branch (@YmcaThika) to deliver a transformative training and awareness session tailored for waste pickers. This initiative was a critical step in promoting inclusion, health, and safety for a group that remains vital yet largely unrecognized within formal waste management systems.
The session aimed to equip waste pickers with knowledge on occupational safety while advocating for their formal recognition and integration into structured waste systems. By shedding light on the risks they face and the essential services they provide, this training sought to empower waste pickers, improve their working conditions, and open up sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Beyond the lively sessions we also empowered them with full Personal Protective Equipment (#PPE) kits to support their day-to-day work. This practical support ensures they can carry out their essential roles more safely and effectively.
Together, we continue to champion a waste sector that is not only circular but also inclusive and just.

KEPRO Launches "Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin" Campaign in Matatus (PSVs)
Nairobi, Kenya – May 2, 2025 – The Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (#KEPRO) is pleased to announce the official launch of the "Taka Tu: Kutupa Kwa Bin" campaign — a public awareness initiative under our Consumer-Led Transformation (CLT) initiative, aimed at promoting responsible waste disposal within Kenya’s public transport system.
Through strategic partnerships with matatu operators, associations, and key stakeholders, this campaign will transform matatus into platforms for environmental stewardship by encouraging passengers to use onboard waste bins.

Restoring Dignity to Waste Pickers:
At #KEPRO, our mission to manage post-consumer packaging waste and promote sustainable waste management wouldn’t be possible without the invaluable contributions of waste pickers—the backbone of waste recovery.
This year, we’ve collaborated with waste pickers across 41 counties, listening to their stories and drawing inspiration from their dedication. In 2024 alone, we supported them by providing 1,800 sets of Personal Protective Equipment (#PPEs), 400 essential tools (including spades, fork jembes, rakes, gunny bags), and 328 bins,( inclusive of cages).
We remain committed to empowering and uplifting waste pickers, restoring their dignity, and scaling our impact together in the coming year.

Centered on the theme "People & Opportunities in East Africa," the event brought together thought leaders and innovators to explore transformative solutions for a sustainable future.

On 17th September 2024, #KEPRO Kenya joined The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (#KARA) for a workshop in Nakuru City on the development of National Guidelines & Standards on waste segregation at source. The event was a post-pilot workshop aimed at sharing lessons, experiences and best practices from the pilot study on waste segregation at household level.
Speaking at the event, KEPRO's CEO James Odongo re-emphasized the organization's core pillar of Community. At KEPRO Kenya, We believe that communities and neighborhood associations play a key role in achieving and maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
