@lucinda_brand delivered a controlled, patient, and ultimately dominant performance to win the 2026
#Koppenbergcross (elite women) on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in Oudenaarde, Belgium.
The world champion (@Baloise_Trek) finished the six-lap race in 53:29, 53 seconds clear of Sara Casasola and 1:22 ahead of Marie Schreiber.
It was her fourth win of the young 2026-27 cyclocross season (after Dendermonde, Ardooie, and Overijse) and her second consecutive victory at the event, defending the title she first took in 2025.
The race was the opening round of the X²O Badkamers Trofee, whose overall classification is decided on cumulative time. This made every second valuable—Brand explicitly raced with the February standings in mind.
The circuit repeatedly featured the steep, cobbled Koppenberg climb. Conditions were unusually dry and sunny with little mud, producing a fast but still brutally hard course.
Brand later noted surprise when the speaker announced six laps remaining, saying she had never completed that many at a women’s Koppenbergcross and that it reflected the course state and the high level of the field. “The Koppenberg is always a tough race. It doesn’t really matter how it lies,” she said.
Hélène Clauzel (and initially Amandine Fouquenet) set a strong early tempo, leading up the first ascent of the Koppenberg and stretching the field. A selective front group quickly formed that included Brand, Casasola (making her season debut), Schreiber, Clauzel, and Inge van der Heijden.
Casasola claimed the maximum 15 bonus seconds at the first-lap intermediate sprint. Schreiber then drove the pace at the front for SD Worx–Protime.
Brand rode noticeably more patiently, following the accelerations rather than forcing the issue, while still describing the early tempo as tight and hard: “We were already riding a tight pace in the first laps. It certainly wasn’t easy.”
By the end of the second lap, Clauzel was beginning to lose contact and the chasers were roughly 30 seconds back.
After three laps the leading trio was Brand, Casasola, and Schreiber, with Clauzel alone in fourth. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado was fifth. Fem van Empel, who had started from a poor grid position (around 22nd), had already climbed to sixth.
Brand later explained that attacking earlier was unnecessary given the pace already being set.
The race turned on the fourth of six laps.
Brand launched a sustained attack that immediately dropped Schreiber. Casasola initially stayed on her wheel, but Brand’s further increase in pace (including through technical sections and on the climb) broke the Italian’s resistance.
Brand surged up the Koppenberg and reached the top with an 11-second advantage over Casasola; Schreiber was already nearly half a minute back.
With two laps remaining, the podium places were essentially settled. Brand continued to extend her lead solo while riding hard the entire way—precisely because of the time-based X2O classification.
She began the final lap roughly 30 seconds clear of Casasola.
There were no late mistakes. Brand climbed the Koppenberg for the final time already in full control and crossed the line in 53:29, arms raised.
She had gone deep: immediately after the finish she got off the bike and sat on the ground atop the climb, exhausted.
She later explained the effort: “It’s a dirty classification. You know that in February every second can count. You really give everything up to the finish line, and you’ll feel that on this course… If you can extend your lead, you have to do it, even if it makes it even heavier. Now it was harder than hard.”
She also noted that on a course like this you want to carry speed into the next hard section, but the time stakes made the full commitment unavoidable.
Top 10
1. Lucinda Brand (Baloise Verzekeringen – Het Poetsbureau Lions) 53:29
2. Sara Casasola (Crelan – Corendon) +0:53
3. Marie Schreiber (Team SD Worx – Protime) +1:22
4. Hélène Clauzel (777TV CX Team) +1:44
5. Amandine Fouquenet (Pauwels Sauzen – Altez Industriebouw) +2:02
6. Denise Betsema (De Ceuster Bouwkranen) +2:06
7. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Fenix-Premier Tech) +2:18
8. Fem van Empel (Specialized TMRW) +2:43
9. Kristýna Zemanová (Crelan – Corendon) +3:21
10. Inge van der Heijden (Crelan – Corendon) +3:27
Casasola’s second place on her season debut was strong; Schreiber’s third confirmed solid form after driving the early race.
Van Empel’s eighth, after a long climb through the field, was a respectable return on the course where she had abandoned the previous year.
Brand’s 53-second winning margin (and the associated time) immediately put her in the lead of the X2O Badkamers Trofee, with teammate Thibau Nys also winning the men’s race for a team sweep.
Brand used the first half of the race to measure the field and conserve, then produced one decisive acceleration on the legendary cobbles of the Koppenberg that no one could match, and rode the remaining laps at full gas to maximize her advantage in the time classification.
It was a masterclass in control and strength on one of cyclocross’s most iconic climbs.

Marie Schreiber (Team SD Worx-Protime, Luxembourg) finished 3rd at the 2026 Koppenbergcross (opening round of the X²O Badkamers Trofee) on 1 November 2026 in the Oudenaarde/Melden area of Belgium, 1:22 behind winner Lucinda Brand, with Sara Casasola 2nd at +0:53.
The women’s elite race covered six laps on the classic, demanding course built around repeated ascents of the steep, cobbled Koppenberg (famous from the Tour of Flanders), plus technical sections and other climbs. Conditions were unusually dry, but the terrain remained extremely bumpy and physically taxing.
Schreiber arrived in excellent form after winning five of her first six races of the season (including Meulebeke ahead of Brand, the Nacht van Woerden, and the GP de la Commune de Contern), plus a second place in Ardooie.
The race served as a final dress rehearsal ahead of the European Championships in Zeddam the following weekend.
French riders Hélène Clauzel and Amandine Fouquenet led the first ascent of the Koppenberg. Schreiber started further back (reports place her around 10th then 8th early on) but quickly moved up. She accelerated on a dirt-and-grass section to take the initiative and drive the pace, forming a selective front group that included Brand, Casasola (racing her first cyclocross of the season), Clauzel, and initially Inge van der Heijden.
In the fourth of six laps, world champion Lucinda Brand (the defending winner) accelerated. Schreiber, who had been setting her own tempo throughout, did not react immediately.
As she later explained, she rode her own pace the whole race and chose not to respond to the attack “because otherwise you’d blow yourself up.” She did not look at the others; they were simply faster.
Brand dropped Schreiber right away.
Casasola stayed with Brand a bit longer before cracking as well.
Brand reached the top of the Koppenberg about 11 seconds clear of Casasola; by the end of the lap Schreiber was roughly 29 seconds back.
Brand then soloed the remaining distance, extending her advantage over the final two laps.
Brand crossed the line in 53:29 to take her fourth win of the season and second consecutive Koppenbergcross title.
Casasola finished 53 seconds down for second. Schreiber held third, 1:22 behind, ahead of Clauzel (+1:44) and Fouquenet (+2:02). Behind them came Denise Betsema, Ceylin Alvarado, and van Empel (8th at +2:43).
Schreiber called it a super-tough race with so many climbs. The very bumpy cobbled sections caused particular problems: she had difficulty holding the handlebars, her hands and forearms began to hurt badly, and she was seen shaking her arms out multiple times.
She limited the damage relative to Casasola and kept Clauzel at bay, securing a solid podium that confirmed her strong early-season form even if the course (and Brand’s superior climbing power on the day) proved too much for a win.
Looking ahead, she preferred not to overthink the European Championships, noting the Koppenberg is hard to compare to the Zeddam course, and focused on maintaining her form.
Overall, it was a race of attrition in which Schreiber’s aggressive early pacing selected the group and demonstrated her current level, but Brand’s mid-race acceleration proved decisive on the iconic climbs.
