Hilariously I was one of the few boys who did *not* enjoy Hatchet when we read it in maybe 5th grade? But I had already discovered Clive Cussler and hunting for hidden Inca treasure and raising the Titanic was much more interesting than surviving in the wilderness...
The first novel I ever loved was the survival classic Hatchet, but recently I’ve learned that a *lot* of women despise this book, and see it is as something they were forced to read in school to entice the idiot illiterate boys in their English class. I dove into that tension!

@luke_winkie Man..."would-be incels* just made me so sad, I got a bunch of the hatchet books as a gift and I loved them as a kid, maybe a stereotype but they did get me into reading and to characterize kids who enjoyed the book that way just sucks.
@Rationale_Music @luke_winkie Its interesting Hatchet was optional, I wonder if it was only mandatory at schools where the curriculum was entirely male-centric like mine. In fact, to kill a mockingbird was optional.
@Oxladesoup88 2 big hatchet men thaat play in a hoofebaw team
Shots each kicking defenders off the pitch to create chances for each other
I was a reader as a kid.
I read 3 Musketeers in 5th grade.
As an older parent I read Hatchet in my 40s because I was curious what my son was reading and what we were discussing.
I loved it.
The more women push their 'nuances' on us, the more I lose respect for them.
I recently decided that boys should be in classes by themselves with male teachers - the manly kind.. With physical activity and action.
I have seen kids struggle until they go on Trail Life campout trips and gain education of all types while being physical.
We are different.
Embrace. Don't try to destroy it.
@wokal_distance I've been intentionally building up a library of boy books, stuff I wasn't much drawn to but my boys will be. Robert Louis Stevenson and Hatchet and all that. Jane Eyre is great, but they won't be inspired by it.
Hatchet, and it's true story precursor Lost on a Mountain in Maine, are terrific stories about survival by observation and problem solving. Boys like that stuff. The emotional core is man vs nature. When do I fight it and when do I use it. The ending is staggering in its brilliance. The boy finds the survival kit and he has changed and learned so much that he wonders whether he would even be the same person if not for his travails. 10 out of 10

Women hate Hatchet because not even once in 192 pages does Brian hold the blade to a female self insert character’s throat while they have magical dubiously consensual sex. Unforgivable.

Boys like Hatchet, girls don't, somehow this isn't just boys and girls having different interests generally.

@ravenwing263 @luke_winkie hatchet seem almost reactionary in comparison to slights they’ve received about “girl books” from boys, as well)
Crazy… was it because I’m gay? Was it because I have Gender Issues™️? I loved Hatchet so much, but I was also big on just Boy Stuff so I never realized people wouldn’t like this book

@HQNewsNow @amyactonoh I really can't blame her. If Ramaswamy had come out and said "I wasn't aware of the full family history here, but now affirm that this ad should never have come out"... maybe the hatchet could've been buried. But he just doubled down like a damn sociopath.
@luke_winkie I don't get the hate, Hatchet wasn't my all time favorite, but then I realized it was it's own series and I found Brian's Return to be far more interesting. Woodsong is a personal fave of Paulsen's for me!
Can't leave out Where the Red Fern Grows and plenty of others.
@luke_winkie Also calling little boys who enjoyed Hatchet "Would-be-incels" is actually straight up insanity, what on earth is she talking about
Men read Hatchet and saw paradise. Women saw 54 days without a group chat.

@wpri12 If they enforce it, people will go back to shopping there, as long as the stabbings and hatchet attacks in PVD are also stopped.
@luke_winkie That’s honestly nuts to me that so many girls hated hatchet, in my fifth grade class there was a whole group of us who loved it, and i think it is partially responsible for my love of the outdoors as an adult
@KyleSmith46 @luke_winkie I think when I read hatchet I just thought My side of the Mountain was better.
@grentontv How many hatchet wounds have you stuck your dick in? Ballpark figure.
