University of Lahore Launches Landmark Climate Action Initiative with Eight Partner Universities
The University of Lahore @ULahore in collaboration with eight partner universities officially launched the Lahore Air Quality and Climate Action (LAACA) initiative. This groundbreaking project, spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Rabia Akhtar, Director, Center for Security, Strategy, and Policy Research @CSSPR_UOL and Dr. Aazir Khan, Director, Integrated Engineering Centre of Excellence (IECE) under the patronage of Mr. Nasir Mahmood, COO University of Lahore, aims to tackle climate change and promote environmental sustainability through data-driven interventions and community engagement.
The partner universities include:
University of the Punjab (PU)
Government College University (GCU)
University of Management and Technology (UMT)
Forman Christian College University (FCCU)
Beaconhouse National University (BNU)
University of Central Punjab (UCP)
University of South Asia
Kinnaird College for Women University
As part of this initiative, IECE at the University of Lahore has developed air quality monitors called UOL Weather and Air Quality Integrated Apparatus (WAQIA). UOL is providing these monitors free of cost to the eight partner universities, with each receiving two outdoor units for their campuses. Partner universities will install UOL-WAQIA air quality monitors to collect and analyze pollution data, enabling them to develop effective interventions for improving air quality on their campuses. Additionally, the project will promote sustainability practices through community engagement and the appointment of student ambassadors.

The launch event featured a presentation by Dr. Aazir Khan, Director of IECE, followed by a Q&A session and a discussion on the project's objectives and implementation strategies. The event concluded with closing remarks and a working lunch, fostering collaboration and commitment among the participating institutions.
The LAACA initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing climate change and improving air quality in Lahore. By uniting the academic community and leveraging data-driven approaches, this project aims to create a healthier, more sustainable environment for current and future generations.
