Four years ago I was here at the University of Leiden for LEAPs! π€© It feels very good and reminiscent to be back for #LCGalacticAcceleration, now talking about my PhD work!
Getting started here at @lorentzcenter at #LCGalacticDynamics!
Today we start out with β101β talks on the 4 elements of the workshop: EPRVs, eclipse timing, pulsar timing, and theory/modeling of the dynamical disequilibrium of the Milky Way.
Gaudi:
@sukanya_X et al (2022) showed there are enough in the Kepler field to do this, and PLATO will follow them up 15 years later!
Will reveal a range of distances for Galactic acceleration.

Gaudi:
1) Use Kepler or TESS for 1st epoch, use precise RVs to characterize companions and masses.
2) Constrain confounding effects.
3) Followup after 10 years with with HST, JWST or ARIEL, Twinkle, PLATO.

β¦Applegate mechanism, magnetic braking.
Others (precission + gravity darkening).
Need to choose binaries well! Some are analytic and can subtract them. Others are unimportant for well chosen systems. Generally: old, well-detached binaries.

Need a good time standard. Recommend use BJD(TDB) (accounts for RΓΈmer dela, clock corrections, Shapiro delay and Einstein delay in the Solar System). Basically a solved problem, but be careful.

If you miss ingress or egress, you're in trouble, because it's degenerate with transit duration.
Correlated noise also bites you here! Can't assume white noise.

Some challenges will be:
- nonuniform coverage of eclipse
- correlated noise
- imperfect time standards, and
- astrophysical "noise."

Freire: Assuming GR is right, we can invert and say we are measuring the Galactic acceleration for systems with good distance. We need better distances! VLBI can help.

Friere: β¦except that uncertainties in the Galactic acceleration provide a precision floor.
J2222-0137: has exquisite measurement of distance, again limited by the Galactic acceleration. Residuals are of order 0.3 cm/s/dec
