During the Revolutionary War as British forces closed in on Philadelphia in 1777, Patriots feared the iconic Liberty Bell would be seized and melted down into ammunition for enemy cannons and muskets. So the Patriots took action. The massive 2,000 pound Liberty Bell was carefully loaded onto wagons under the protection of 200 armed soldiers. It was concealed beneath piles of hay and manure then secretly transported northward as part of a massive convoy of roughly 700 wagons. The bell remained hidden for nine long months beneath the floorboards of Zion’s Reformed Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania, while the British occupied Philadelphia. Then, 248 years ago today the Liberty Bell made its triumphant return to Philadelphia after the British evacuated the city. It was brought back in a celebratory procession, restored to its rightful place in the State House steeple and was ready once again to ring out for liberty. A true symbol of American resilience and defiance.
