Today is Sunday. Sometimes I stop and ask myself, “Why am I going to church today?” I can fall into a rut with almost anything in life, including church. Wake up, get everyone ready, drive to the building, sing, listen, talk to people, and come home. If I am not careful, something sacred can begin to feel routine. So it is good for me to remember why I am going. First, I go because God commands His followers to gather. Hebrews tells us not to neglect meeting together, but to encourage one another. Church attendance is not a suggestion reserved for weeks when I feel especially spiritual. Gathering with Christ’s people is part of following Christ. I also go because I need fellowship. Biblical fellowship is more than coffee and small talk. It means sharing life with other believers, knowing them, being known by them, bearing their burdens, celebrating God’s goodness, and reminding one another of the gospel. I go because I need encouragement, and because someone else may need encouragement from me. There are Sundays when I arrive tired, distracted, discouraged, or spiritually dry. God often uses an ordinary conversation, a hymn, a prayer, or a sermon to strengthen me. Sometimes I may be the person God intends to use to strengthen someone else. That is important because church is not merely something I attend to receive religious content. I am part of a body. God has given every believer gifts to use in serving others. I cannot obey all the “one another” commands of Scripture while remaining isolated from everyone else. I go to hear the Word of God read, explained, and applied. I can read the Bible alone, and I should. But God has also appointed pastors to preach His Word publicly and churches to sit beneath that preaching together. I go to pray with other believers and to sing truths that I am sometimes struggling to believe. When the church sings, we are not only praising God. We are teaching and admonishing one another with biblical truth. I go to witness baptisms and gather around the Lord’s Table. In baptism, we see a public picture of union with Christ. In Communion, the church remembers together that Christ’s body was given and His blood was shed for us. I go because I need accountability, correction, and shepherding. Left entirely to myself, I can justify almost anything. God did not design Christians to grow alone. Of course, attending church does not save me. I am saved entirely by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. I do not go to earn God’s favor or prove that I am better than someone who stayed home. I go because Christ has already shown me favor. He saved me, joined me to His people, and gave me a place where I can worship, learn, serve, pray, remember, and grow alongside other believers. That is why I am going to church today.
