Q3- my main take away is restorative justice can work if everybody is bought in . Taking the time to figure out why the student made their choice and what can we do next time is more effective then the standard punishment #LPJALLHSD
Takeaways are that being a more sensitive instructor is what these kids need. “Flies with honey.” It is challenging to have a restorative circle with students who are not willing. The benefits I see for me are that it raises my awareness on how I deal with situations. #LPJALLHSD
Q2- it is my job as a teacher to know all my students and how they act daily . If a student were to act out the norm i would politely ask him to step outside so we could talk through the issue . Reacting aggressive back is never the answer . #LPJALLHSD
When unexpected behaviors happen that are out of character, I like to have a 1 on 1 conversation with that student. I will call out that behavior and ask the student to step outside for a quick chat. I speak with the student and ask them to apologize to their peers. #LPJALLHSD
Q-1- my first thoughts were teachers send students out the classroom way too often . We need to handle the issue in the setting it happened . Circle up is a great way to build those relationships and handle in class problems #LPJALLHSD
I believe this to be true. I like to redirect with statements such as, “Look at the rest of the class, notice they are sitting down.” Stating expectations while modeling. Dealing with the problem in the classroom keeps kids in the class rooms, the learning environment. #LPJALLHSD
Q1- my initial thoughts on the statement, are that teachers are too quick to send a student away and want someone else to handle them. When need to hold the student accountable for their actions and show them we still want them in our classroom and for them to learn. #LPJALLHSD
Q3 My Takeaway from HSD #1-3 is that building relationships is key to restorative justice. Although time consuming and front loaded, the benefits of creating a classroom environment that fosters empathy and responsibility are endless. #LPJALLHSD
Q2 When a student acts out of the norm it is important to understand why instead of punishing. In my class a quick timeout to compose oneself and a conversation about the actions is needed. Understanding the why is important to repairing the issues and building trust. #LPJALLHSD
A1. Often, we think about the now and want to remove the “problem” from class instead of dealing with it and correcting it so it stops. By circling up and talking, your classroom environment can be improved, relationships built and troubling behavior extinguished. #LPJALLHSD
My thoughts are, in reference to number 1, many issues are dealt within the classroom, but sometimes the disruptions become so severe that the student is stealing the education of others. Using a circle time can help by building a community of communication and culture.#LPJALLHSD
A3 #lpjallhsd I ❤️ these hacks! Challenges: retraining teachers to give up lecture time to foster stronger classroom community. I do believe these 'hacks' should start in elementary school so there is a strong community foundation before more age related behaviors arise.
A1 #lpjallhsd initial thought: I agree. Teachers R quick 2 remove 'trouble' students due 2 tight educational schedule which builds barriers between teacher & student, student & class. Removed student loses learning for that day which can lead 2 larger gaps & more bad behavior.
Restorative justice sounds hard because it is a mindset change. If we all take small steps to change our mindset, then it will become part of the culture of every class. The major struggle is time. If all classes put circles into practice, then it’s commonplace. #LPJALLHSD
My thoughts about the Michael situation: as the counselor, I would talk to Michael about the WHY behind the behavior change first. Then, we would discuss how we can have a circle in the classroom amongst his peers. #LPJALLHSD
My thoughts about “Hacking School Discipline” are: if small things, like pencils being thrown, are dealt with in the classroom by using the restorative justice circle, then large issues will happen less frequently because relationships amongst students are being built. #LPJALLHSD
