STRATEGY, VISIBILITY, AND GRIT: How PR Professionals Can Earn a Seat at the Table—and Keep It

Last Friday, I had the privilege of speaking at the @PRAU_Uganda National Public Relations Symposium under the powerful theme: “From Strategy to the C-Suite: Elevating PR to the Boardroom.”
Together with @gomasadde (CEO, UIBFS) and Dr. Patricia Litho (Asst. Commissioner, MEMD), we explored what it really takes for PR professionals to ascend into leadership, boardrooms, and C-suite roles.
Here are some key reflections I shared with fellow communicators, professionals, and emerging leaders:
🔹 Know Yourself, Build Strategically: Every one of us carries something uniquely valuable. If you can recognize it, refine it, and find a way to commercialize or amplify it—you can thrive. For me, it started with writing. From journalism to strategic communication to entrepreneurship, the path was never linear, but it was intentional.
🔹 Agency Life is a PR Bootcamp: Working in a PR agency shaped my resilience, speed, and strategic clarity. If you’re starting out—embrace the chaos. The pressure, sleepless nights, and exposure to multiple industries prepare you in ways no classroom ever can.
🔹 Your Brand Is More Than a Logo: I started CEO East Africa Magazine because I wanted to own the narrative. I learned early: if you wait for permission to lead, you may never get it. Build your own table. Your personal brand is your most valuable equity—invest in it deliberately.
🔹 Be Seen. Be Strategic. Be Remembered: Visibility isn’t vanity—it’s currency. If you want to rise in your organization, you must be intentional. Know who the decision-makers are. Understand what they value. Deliver consistently—and make sure your name is associated with results, reliability, and relevance.
🔹 Understand and Serve Your CEO: Many PR professionals say, “I support the CEO”—but don’t actually know what keeps their CEO up at night. If you truly want to lead, start by deeply understanding the business, its strategy, and the leadership’s real fears and ambitions. That’s how trust is built.
🔹 PR Belongs in the Boardroom: We must stop treating communication as an afterthought. If PR is not present at the executive level, you’re not just slowing down crisis response—you’re forfeiting strategic influence. Communication isn’t a support function—it’s a leadership function.
🔹 Be a Decent Human Being: In the end, your relationships and your reputation will carry you far. Be kind to people at every level—you never know who will open the next door or sit across from you on the next panel. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it.
To Every PR Professional Out There: Don’t just work in the system. Learn it. Shape it. Challenge it.
Start building your leadership story today. Register that company. Ask your CEO better questions. Stretch yourself.
Because the next seat at the table has your name on it—but only if you’ve done the work to claim it. Be Seen. Be Strategic. Be Remembered: Visibility isn’t vanity—it’s currency.
