3/3 What #LessonsfromGaza can/should be developed from above analysis of @CyrilRamaphosa's #SONA2205 remarks? First, this is geopolitical populism in action. It's similar in objective to tyrannical pro-Palestinian mobs that have plagued campuses & city streets across West since Oct 7. Similar rhetoric as well. Both contexts seek to subvert "powerful" in favor of "oppressed" victim class. This helps explain why both domestic & geopolitical progressive populist movements identify so closely with pro-Pal movements - Palestinians & their champions have portrayed 🇵🇸 as "oppressed" by "occupying" "settler colonial" state of @Israel for so long that progressive populists believe they're acting in "solidarity" with the global "oppressed" victim class when they agitate for action they believe supports 🇵🇸. In both cases, progressive populists are actually Iran's useful idiots & advancing the cause of terrorist groups such as #Hamas & #Hezbollah rather than the people of 🇵🇸 in general. Second, geopolitical populists such as Ramaphosa, 🇿🇦 & non-aligned movement have no interest in preserving integrity of int'l law. Quite the contrary, they believe int'l law as it currently exists is INconsistent with their own narrow special interests. This gives incentive to distort & subvert int'l law in order to pursue advantages they otherwise are incapable of achieving diplomatically, economically & militarily. On this note, geopolitical populism is similar to progressive populism in the latter's domestic context. Third, and finally for now, int'l institutions such as @CIJ_ICJ are primary targets for attempts to subvert int'l law in support of geopolitical populist strategic objectives. No (serious) person (actually) believes ICJ will determine 🇮🇱 is/has violat-ing/-ed Genocide Convention in #Gaza. Still, that's not the point of RSA's claim. Just seeking provisional measures & then watching uninformed or malign actors spin the "plausible genocide" lie represents a strategic victory for RSA because it provided a hook for pro-Pal partisans throughout the West to generate political pressure on these governments to limit support to 🇮🇱 during conflict. How & why these distortions actually were propagated can be subject of a later Lesson. For now, analysis above (hopefully) clarifies how & why 🇿🇦 relies on #legaldisinformation as it takes action in "solidarity" with perpetually "oppressed" people of 🇵🇸.
