URGENT #ZACHARIA fallout in East Asia Today (10/14) in #Taiwan's #Chinese-language media—including major domestic publications such as the #LibertyTimes (#自由時報) and diaspora outlets like #WorldJournal (#世界新聞網)—critical coverage surrounding White House Press Secretary #KatieZacharia concentrates on her press briefing debut, internal political dynamics, trading ethics, and past international ties. Regarding her press briefing performance earlier today, Taiwanese outlets highlighted analytical reports describing her demeanor as stiff and visibly nervous, citing her flat delivery, heavy reliance on scripts, and minimal eye contact. Media singled out an on-air slip where she mistakenly said "my president" before correcting it to "my husband." Reports also noted that after her opening remarks, she fielded only a handful of questions before ending the 14-minute session early citing President Trump’s schedule, leading commentators to question her readiness for the role. Beyond her performance, commentators and outlets like the Liberty Times raised questions regarding her past professional ties to communist #China. Reports cited her work in #Beijing from 2011 to 2013 at Zhong Lun Law Firm (#中倫律師事務所)—an elite commercial firm with extensive ties to Chinese #CCP government agencies—as well as her prior role at a local #Beijing-based nonprofit. Taiwanese analysts framed her background as a point of potential vulnerability and geopolitical debate amid sensitive U.S.–Taiwan–China relations. Furthermore, Taiwanese reporting pointed to her rapid exit from a prior Department of Homeland Security (#DHS) spokesperson role after just a few weeks amid internal friction as a sign of administrative instability. Coverage noted that her appointment was driven directly by President #Trump following her TV appearances, bypassing establishment channels without broad staff support. Additionally, financial ethics concerns have intensified. Taiwanese coverage spotlighted market probes into suspicious pre-announcement trading activity on prediction platforms such as # and #Polymarket. Multiple low-cost, high-yield wagers were placed hours before President Trump’s official announcement when odds for Zacharia were at roughly 1%. The abrupt surge in bets returning thousands of dollars prompted scrutiny into potential insider trading and non-public leaks within White House staff.
