who started the trend of doing multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) in linguistic typology? and do most typologists using it know how the maths work? or how it's similar/different from PCA/UMAP/tSNE etc?

I was very proud today to have analysis from my recent working paper on associated motion in Ende (a Pahoturi River language from southern New Guinea, where I did fieldwork Sep-Nov 2017) included in Antoine Guillaume's presentation at the Associated Motion workshop at #lingtyp.
Australian alternate sign languages are endangered. There's fascinating work to do - for example, respect registers exist in many Indigenous languages. There is evidence that there is a respect style of signing (including contracted articulation, sign closer to the body) #lingtyp
@AdamCSchembri Green: I’d love to talk more about how we can incorporate gesture into AM research. A theme of the workshop today has been the problem of relying on dictionary sentences to work out what’s going on. We would proceed a lot more if we had deeper, more contextual examples. #lingtyp
