sometimes i've been asked to give advice to grammar writers, as a person reading a lot of grammars and doing linguistic typology.
the key thing I'd say is: do what you want to do, just be super explicit and transparent about what you did. surprise us

While MWE's have achieved state-of-the-art perf. on cross-lingual transfer for low-resource lang's, there is much potential left unused in linguistic resources for various linguistic features. #LingTyp @YiyiChen will investigate how to best integrate these! 2/2 @johannesbjerva
However, there is explicit typological information available (e.g. word ordering, morphological features) from #LingTyp! How can we best leverage these explicit typological features for improving, e.g., machine translation to and from low-resource languages? 2/2 @johannesbjerva

What do you think of as the greatest achievements of linguistic typology?

How would you define linguistic typology?
I've been tasked with doing an intro to linguistic typology (#lingtyp) for non-linguists. In preparation, I've looked at articles, talks and topics at the most central journal, conference and mailing list and made slides with examples.

who started the trend of doing multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) in linguistic typology? and do most typologists using it know how the maths work? or how it's similar/different from PCA/UMAP/tSNE etc?

SIGTYP 2020 Shared Task: Prediction of Typological Features https://t.co/bXib567z5y
Linguistic typology twitter (#lingtyp): have the field stopped worrying about super-strong absolute universals and instead embraced truly probabilistic thinking, or is it just in my bubble?
Excited to have a first-author paper accepted to ACL! Come and hear all about 'Uncovering Probabilistic Implications in Typological Knowledge Bases' in Florence, later this year. Pre-print will be made available soon. :) #NLProc #LingTyp #ACL2019NLP
In "Uncovering Probabilistic Implications in Typological Knowledge Bases", we find implications between linguistic features, e.g. that langs w. OV word order often have postpositions #ACL2019NLP #NLProc @johannesbjerva @YovaKem @ryandcotterell @IAugenstein
