Last night’s non-#LockDownAstronomy also yielded this colourful image of Messier 57, The Ring Nebula, where a dying star lights up roughly spherical shells of hydrogen gas in red in its outer parts, & ionised oxygen in green closer to the residual white dwarf core in the centre.

Last night was Moon-free & clear for some non-#LockDownAstronomy, so I went after a rather more challenging (if less visually impressive!) target than usual, UGC 12632 (UGC is the 1970s Uppsala General Catalogue, documenting 13,000 galaxies visible from the northern hemisphere).

A little non-#LockDownAstronomy last night with the @Unistellar #eVscope to celebrate #JWST, reproducing one of those first images that it released of Stephan’s Quintet. To be fair, JWST isn’t sited in an urban back yard surrounded by trees, and collects 3000 times more light.

For last night’s non-#LockDownAstronomy, a couple of hours with the #eVscope looking at NGC 7538. Embedded within this glowing gas cloud are more than 400 stars at various stages of formation, a star cluster in the process of forming,

Not ideal for observing last night, with moonlight reflecting off scattered clouds, but I couldn’t resist getting the #eVscope to see what non-#LockDownAstronomy sights can be seen above Nottingham anyway. So here’s NGC 6946 (The Fireworks Galaxy) & NGC 7635 (The Bubble Nebula).

A beautiful night to be out with the #eVscope for some non-#LockDownAstronomy. This time of year, the plane of our galaxy is overhead at night, so a great time to be exploring it. Nosing around, I stumbled across this impressive spot in the constellation of Cygnus.

First clear night in forever and no Moon, so I couldn’t resist some easy non-#LockDownAstronomy with my @unistellar #eVscope looking at an old favourite, Messier 27, the Dumbbell Nebula. A star like the Sun that blew off its outer layers at the end of its life, 10,000 years ago.

Seeing what is on offer in the back garden tonight for non-#LockDownAstronomy using @NightCapApp. Stars trails, satellites and shooting stars, a few of which line up roughly right to be #Perseids (cannot get a precise radiant point, as unknown when in the exposure they appeared).

A beautiful night for some non-#LockDownAstronomy, so a look at one of the collection of oddities in the Arp Catalog, Arp 330. It is a cluster some 400 million light years away, which ended up in Arp’s catalogue because of the tight linear chain that half a dozen galaxies form.

Some gaps in the high clouds last night, so a quick non-#LockDownAstronomy look with the @Unistellar #eVscope at an object from my favourite car-crash collection, The Arp Catalog. This object, Arp 293, comprises a pair of galaxies, NGC 6385 & 6286.

A clear hour last night for some non-#LockDownAstronomy with the #eVscope, so a look at a visually uninspiring sight, the Draco Dwarf Galaxy, which is made up from some of the very faint stars you can see scattered across this image.

In the eternal twilight of June, and a lot of Moon, but a warm clear night tempted me to get the #eVscope out for half an hour for a little post-#LockDownAstronomy, so here’s a quick snap of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907, as a reminder of quite how thin disk galaxies are.

Some clouds last night, but it’s been too long since my last non-#LockDownAstronomy, so I picked a relatively unchallenging target, Messier 63, also known as NGC 5055 and the Sunflower Galaxy, and gave it a go.

For last night’s non-#LockDownAstronomy with the #eVscope, a look at the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 3344. As well as its beautiful spiral arms, it is a great example of a ringed galaxy.

A partly clear night for some non-#LockDownAstronomy with the #eVscope last night, so a look at the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3432. Its slightly distorted shape seems to be driven by its gravitational interactions with the faint companion just to the right in this image.

For last night’s non-#LockDownAstronomy with the @unistellar #eVscope, a look through passing clouds at the faint disturbed spiral galaxy NGC 2805 and its edge-on companions NGC 2814 and NGC 2820.

A little daytime non-#LockDownAstronomy with the #eVscope catching an impressive array of sunspots. (Do NOT look directly at the Sun either with the naked eye or a telescope. Do NOT point a telescope at the Sun without a proper undamaged solar filter!).

For last night’s #eVscope non-#LockDownAstronomy, I picked another of the array of beautiful little galaxies that passes over my back yard each night. NGC 3726 has it all: a bright nucleus, a bar, a ring, a grand design spiral, a spray of smaller arms, and a very asymmetric disk.

Sometimes for non-#LockDownAstronomy, it is nice to point the #eVscope at an old friend, just to make sure it is still there. And the glorious spiral galaxy that is Messier 81 is always worth a look.

Last night’s non-#LockDownAstronomy with the #eVscope included a long look at NGC 4244. This edge-on spiral galaxy shows quite how thin the disks of galaxies really are, with a stellar distribution that is uniformly narrow right out to its outermost parts.
