It’s a Kushner corruption twofer today. Vladimir Putin brought up a multibillion-dollar oil deal with Trump's Ukraine peace negotiators, and the group in line to buy it is full of people connected to those very same negotiators. On Sept. 5, Putin met Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff at the Kremlin and raised the sale of Lukoil's international assets. Lukoil is one of Russia's biggest energy companies. The assets include oil fields in Cameroon, refineries in Europe, and gas stations in New Jersey. The Trump administration sanctioned Lukoil a year ago, which forced it to sell. Here is why that matters: if the U.S. approves a sale, the sanctions come off those assets and they're instantly worth more. Lukoil valued them at $20 billion earlier this year. The leading bidder group includes Todd Boehly, the Dodgers co-owner who gave $2 million to Trump-aligned causes and has little oil experience. It also includes the Qatar-based Al-Khayyat family business, whose owners are Kushner and Ivanka Trump's partners on a luxury resort in Albania. A third member is an Abu Dhabi fund controlled by Sheikh Tahnoon. His affiliate bought $2 billion of the Trump family's World Liberty crypto, which Witkoff co-founded and his son helps run. Tahnoon also oversees Lunate, one of the biggest investors in Kushner's own firm. The U.S. government's development finance agency is putting money in too. To be clear about what's confirmed: the Times says there's no indication that Kushner or Witkoff themselves stand to profit, yet. A Witkoff spokeswoman says he has no conflict and no financial stake. But a senior administration official confirmed that both men helped negotiate the financial terms of the government's investment. Treasury told the Times that sanctions policy is set by the White House, and people involved said the key decisions are being made there. The next sanctions extension runs out Oct. 29. Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's economic envoy, has been closely involved in the sale process, per the Times. On Saturday, as the story circulated, he publicly called Kushner "a Peacemaker" on X. Hui Chen, a former DOJ ethics adviser, called the entanglements alarming and asked whether personal interests will influence which bidder wins.
