Bronze head of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, found in the Roman fort at Dunaszekcső (ancient Lugio) on the banks of the Hungarian Danube. The head was originally part of a full-length statue of the emperor erected in a central building of the fort, and likely a focus for the soldiers' veneration of the imperial cult. While the portrait is rightly regarded as a masterpiece of Roman bronze sculpture, it is probably representative of the imperial statues that stood in most, if not all, of the Roman camps along the embattled Danube frontier – guarded by no less than 7 legionary fortresses and 120 auxiliary forts. c.161-169 AD, Janus Pannonius Museum, Hungary.
