#Mýa @MYAPLANET9 feat. Sisqó – “It’s All About Me”
📅 Released: March 10, 1998
💿 Album: Mýa (1998) – #81 in my countdown
📊 Chart Peaks: 🇺🇸 #6 Hot 100 · #2 R&B
🎛️ Produced by: Darryl “Day” Pearson
My favorite track on the album is “Baby It’s Yours” – but “It’s All About Me” is almost equally good. And since there’s no video for the former, let’s give some extra love to Mýa’s fabulous debut single instead!
“It’s All About Me” is such a wonderfully smooth piece of late-90s R&B: elegant, seductive and never overproduced. Mýa’s soft, understated delivery works beautifully alongside Sisqó’s more powerful voice – the chemistry between them carries the entire track.
The production interpolates Art of Noise’s “Moments in Love,” creating that dreamy, instantly recognizable atmosphere. And the video – featuring Mýa and Sisqó dancing, flirting and even fencing – introduced her as far more than just another young R&B singer. She had presence, moves and quiet confidence from day one.
A #6 debut single on the Hot 100 wasn’t a bad way to begin a career, either. Before “Ghetto Supastar” brought Mýa to an even bigger audience, this was the real starting point – and it still sounds remarkably smooth today.
💭 Thoughts: “It’s All About Me” or “Movin’ On” – which Mýa debut-era single gets your vote?

👨💻 My Take: At first, I didn’t take Mýa all that seriously.
I mainly knew her as the young featured voice on “Ghetto Supastar” and from “It’s All About Me” alongside Sisqó from Dru Hill. She seemed like another promising singer appearing in the middle of the late-90s R&B boom – talented, attractive, everywhere for a moment, but perhaps not necessarily built for the long run.
Then I bought the album. And it really grew on me.
More than 25 years later, I still enjoy listening to it. That probably says more about its quality than any chart position ever could.
Mýa is understated, unpretentious and remarkably well-aged. It doesn’t constantly demand your attention with enormous hooks or overproduced vocals. Instead, it settles into a smooth, relaxed R&B groove and simply stays there. Mýa’s voice is light and youthful, but there’s enough personality to keep the album from becoming anonymous.
My favorite is “Baby It’s Yours” — a beautifully restrained slow jam with exactly the kind of warm, late-night atmosphere I loved about 90s R&B.
But the album runs deeper than that. “Movin’ On” has a tougher Hip Hop edge, while “It’s All About Me” remains an irresistible debut single and a perfect pairing with Sisqó. “Keep On Lovin’ Me” is another smooth album cut that has held up surprisingly well.
And then there’s “If You Died I Wouldn’t Cry Cause You Never Loved Me Anyway.” What a title – and what brutally direct lyrics! Behind the elegant production is a seriously bitter breakup song that doesn’t leave much room for reconciliation. 😳
The album was produced by a broad group that included Darryl “Day” Pearson, Daryl Simmons, Nokio from Dru Hill and Sisqó. That variety gives it enough different textures without making it sound scattered.
This isn’t an album I would describe as revolutionary, nor does it contain the decade’s most spectacular vocal performance. Its appeal is quieter than that. It’s simply a very good, cohesive R&B debut that proved much more durable than I expected when I first heard it.
Sometimes the records that don’t shout the loudest are the ones that stay with you. And Mýa still releases new albums. The most recent one, "Retrosoect", just arrived in May.
💭 Thoughts: Did Mýa’s debut grow on you, too – or did you forget about her?
