This week, #MDFC joined CSOs and youth advocates gathered by @HDIRwanda for a 2-day dialogue reflecting on the journey (2008 laws → 2016 reforms → 2025 breakthrough) that secured adolescents aged 15+ the right to access SRHR services, including contraception, without parental consent.
The dialogue provided an opportunity to review the advocacy journey that led to adolescents’ access to SRHR services and allowed participants to reflect on the achievements, setbacks, and lessons learned from these advocacy efforts, with the aim of sustaining the momentum and strategizing to address pressing adolescent SRHR issues.
Discussions also examined the persistent barriers that adolescents continue to face, including stigma, cultural norms, and intergenerational gaps, while exploring strategies for constructive engagement and community dialogue.
The work doesn’t stop here! Together, we must turn this law into a lived reality so every adolescent in Rwanda can grow up healthy, safe, and full of hope.

Today, #MDFC proudly joined @AfriYAN_Rwanda's continuous 3-day workshop, powered by @GenGRwanda, which aims to equip youth-led and civil society organizations with the knowledge and tools needed to implement ILO Convention C190 and adopt the PPSEAH policy in our workplaces and programs.
Day 1 challenged us to examine the privileges and power held by different genders in our society, as well as the real impacts on representation and leadership. The conversations went deep into the root causes of inequality, reminding us that gender balance is more than a policy; it’s a daily practice we must live out in our organizations.
This is the first step of a journey that promises even more eye-opening discussions ahead.
This morning, #MDFC had the privilege to join the staff meeting at @hospital_muhima, aiming to strengthen access to safe, legal abortion care while ensuring that healthcare providers are at the forefront.
With doctors, midwives, and IOSC staff, we reviewed the Rwanda Ministerial Order guiding the provision of legal and safe abortion. They highlighted practical barriers, including limited legal awareness, stigma, training gaps, a shortage of psychologists, and agreed on the need for continuous legal/ethical training, VCAT refreshers, clearer internal pathways to reduce delays, and stronger multidisciplinary referrals.
Muhima’s focal point physicians will serve as in-house resources to support their peers. Next steps include scheduling a VCAT refresher and working closely with focal point physicians to monitor progress in service delivery.

Today, #MDFC had the honor of hosting delegates from Denmark-YEAMG (Youth Education Activities on Gender-Based Violence and Mental Health) @YEAMG_MEDSAR. Their visit was part of their ongoing partnership engagement with @medsar_rwanda, and it was a pleasure to engage in a meaningful dialogue around our collaborative efforts to combat #GBV and promote mental well-being.
We had the opportunity to showcase the strong partnership between #MEDSAR and #MDFC, highlighting the impactful initiatives we are implementing together to address gender-based violence within communities.
The YEAMG team also shared eye-opening insights and experiences gathered from other regions they’ve visited reminding the urgency and importance of strengthening youth-led actions in addressing GBV and mental health.
We are grateful for this exchange, and we look forward to deepening our collaborations for a safer, healthier, and more informed generation.

Today, #MDFC had the privilege of joining the stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Rwanda Nursing and Midwifery Union. We were reminded of the critical role that nurses and midwives play in our healthcare system and their tireless efforts to advance universal health coverage.
Through this meeting, we had the opportunity to learn about @RNMU1 impactful work in capacity building, women’s empowerment, and climate resilience. We also gained valuable insight into the journey of those in this noble profession, the challenges they face, the progress they have made, and the dedication that drives them forward.
It was a great opportunity to connect with organizations and institutions working together to promote community health. We are happy to collaborate with RNMU and look forward to continuing our partnership to support and strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Yvonne highlighted Rwanda’s journey toward improving access to safe abortion services. Significant milestones include the 2012 legal reforms that allowed access to safe abortion under 4 specific conditions, the 2018 removal of court approval for accessing services, 5 grounds in 2019 to the the new December 2024 Ministerial Order on abortion.
These developments demonstrate Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to enhancing women’s health and rights.
