There you go again! Abiy Ahmed Ali of #Ethiopia and his "Grand" Maritime Delusion 😂If there were an award for going in circles, he’d win it every year, and hands down. As Albert Einstein famously put it, #insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, and here we are, watching the same movie on repeat.
Abiy hosted another fancy-sounding conference in Addis Ababa titled "Maritime Governance in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Region," featuring lots of talking but zero new ideas. The comedy? The man who can barely manage his own backyard wants to govern the world's hottest sea lanes. To make it funnier, they tried to rebrand this Potemkin Ethiopia vanity project as a pillar of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
You couldn’t make this up. The regime in Ethiopia, landlocked, mind you, now has a Navy Chief. Yes, a navy… without a sea. Peak comedy.
For whatever reason, Somalia showed up from the neighboring coastal players. And of course, Somaliland sent someone too. That tells you everything. When you throw a party and nobody comes, it might be time to check the invitation, and the idea behind it.
Clearly, the Abiy regime keeps recycling the same line: Ethiopia needs sea access. Sometimes it’s framed as economic survival, sometimes as a historical right, and now dressed up as “win-win regional integration.” Different packaging, same BS.
But here’s the problem: coastal nations hear “sovereign access” and see a red flag, and rightly so. Because in plain English, that means taking over someone else’s land. And that runs straight into the brick wall of international law and the African Union’s own rules about respecting borders.
Potemkin leaders of Ethiopia have tried everything for four long years: diplomacy, memorandums (remember the Somaliland deal that blew up?), speeches, conferences. Each time, same result: rejection, tension, and a lot of wasted breath. Yet they keep coming back like a bad horror sequel nobody asked for.
Let’s be clear: “sovereign access” isn’t even a real maritime term. It’s word salad. In the real world, either territory is sovereign, or it isn’t. You don’t get to tack the word “sovereign” in front of “access” and hope it turns into something meaningful. That’s not how the world works. Nope.
What Ethiopia actually needs is & already has straightforward: freedom of navigation and reliable commercial port access. That’s normal. That’s legal. That’s how landlocked countries operate every day. No drama, no fantasy, no imaginary fleets.
The Horn of Africa doesn’t need speeches about ships that don’t exist. It needs stability, trust, and practical agreements that move real goods for real people. Trade routes, not threatening talking points.
And here’s the part that makes it more than just comedy, it’s dangerous. Ethiopia is already wobbling under political and economic pressure, close to the edge where things can fall apart fast, if not already doing so. Yet instead of putting out fires at home, Abiy seems busy chasing fantasies at sea while the house is burning behind him.
But again, we are talking about a nation state, Ethiopia, run by a con man and a madman named, Abiy Ahmed Ali, who seems determined to reach perfection--one delusional circle at a time. 🤷🏾♂️
