Dr Rishika Deshmukh, Researcher, Jindal Foundation’s CSR team, Odisha, India, presents "Exploring the Intersections of Maternal Mental Health and Protracted Conflict: A Case of Kashmir Women."
She states, "Maternal mental health is a global concern. However, there is an urgent need for greater awareness, and this gap is even more pronounced in conflict-affected areas like Kashmir."
Women in conflict zones often suffer in silence due to social stigma. The pervasive feelings of powerlessness, along with high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among widows and pregnant women, reveal a severe gap in mental health support."

Dr Sankalpa Satapathy, Assistant Professor, Social Epidemiology, Institute of Public Health, Kalyani, West Bengal, addresses the violence experienced by women with disabilities in Odisha.
"Violence against women should not be viewed as a private matter—it is both a public health issue and a human rights violation. Women with disabilities are particularly vulnerable, facing double discrimination compared to men with disabilities."
Drawing from a study conducted in Odisha based on interviews with 27 cisgender women, Dr Satapathy highlights the emotional abuse, name-calling, and bullying that these women face daily. Tragically, many are addressed solely by the label of their disability instead of their names.
“Violence is not always an action taken—it can also be perpetuated through passive neglect,” she highlights.

Sharin D’Souza, Assistant Research Coordinator at Sangath India, discusses the importance of trans-affirmative mental health care during public health emergencies, drawing insights from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“During the lockdown, the trans community faced compounded stigma, social isolation, hostile family environments, and systemic barriers in healthcare, intensifying mental distress,” Sharin explains.
"Our project aimed to understand the types of community support the trans community could access during the pandemic and where gaps still exist in mental health provision.”

Dr Bhavya Fernandez, Research Officer at the State Health Systems Resource Centre in Kerala, highlights the healthcare barriers faced by the transgender community and their heightened risk for non-communicable diseases.
“Transgender individuals encounter significant barriers within the healthcare system—from inadequate infrastructure, like the absence of appropriate restroom facilities and gender-inclusive options on forms, to uncomfortable, intrusive questioning by healthcare providers. Discrimination is also common, with experiences of rushed, delayed, or even denied consultations.”

Shweta Narayan (@CemShweta), Campaign Lead from Global Climate and Health Alliance, India talks in depth about the #climatecrisis at the #MSFSciAsia 2024.
She says, "The climate crisis is not an easy topic to discuss, but it’s essential to recognize that our planet—our home—is under severe threat.
We face a ‘triple crisis’: biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. Biodiversity is in rapid decline, and pollution is taking a devastating toll. Toxic chemicals have invaded our food systems and our bodies, leaving an intergenerational impact.
The phrase is not 'climate change' but rather 'climate crisis' and this crisis not in a distant future; it’s happening here and now."

Rahul Dwivedi, Serious Bacterial Infections Access Leader at @GARDP, Geneva, shares valuable insights into their efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
"GARDP has partnered with ICMR to examine the use of reserved antibiotics in ICU settings. We're also working to make new antibiotics available in India and over 135 other countries. As we conceptualize our study, it's crucial to understand how these products will be utilized in tertiary care centers across India. Capturing real-world insights is essential, along with establishing guidelines for the use of reserved antibiotics."

Dr Kamini Walia, Senior Scientist and Lead of the AMR initiative at ICMR, New Delhi, shares critical insights:
"AMR is one of the flagship programs of @ICMRDELHI , and I appreciate being included in this important discussion. In India, we face both access and excess challenges regarding AMR.
This issue has been a key point of discussion with regulators and stakeholders.
There’s the question of whether to ban the over-the-counter sale of antimicrobials. Should we deny access to antibiotics for segments of society that already struggle to reach healthcare facilities? This is a critical issue that requires careful planning."

Dr Mala Chhabra, Senior Consultant Microbiology at RML, New Delhi, discusses the challenges faced by doctors in tertiary care hospitals in terms of battling #AMR.
"Doctors are like weaponless warriors. Many patients arrive having already taken antibiotics—often available over the counter or prescribed by both credible and non-credible sources—complicating their treatment.
The first question doctors should ask is whether the patient truly needs antibiotics. After reviewing the patient’s reports, we can refer to national guidelines to start the empirical treatment."

Dr Hyfa Mohammed Ali, Program Manager at ReAct Asia Pacific, India, shares insights on community engagement in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the Antibiotic Smart Community Project in Kerala.
The project used a set of 15 indicators to assess the "antibiotic smartness" of the community.
This indicator framework laid the foundation for an action agenda, developed in collaboration with local groups. The agenda serves as a point of entry for integrating AMR interventions into the existing healthcare system.

Lebohang Kobola, Community Engagement Officer at Médecins Sans Frontières, Johannesburg, shares insights on transforming @MSF’s approach to community-led initiatives by empowering community-based organizations (CBOs) through targeted capacity building to ensure sustained access to healthcare services.
Highlighting the importance of working with grassroots organizations, she discusses the "Transformational Investment Capacity (TIC)"—an investment hub that supports CBOs in building long-term capabilities.
Once strengthened, these CBOs can independently implement community-led solutions, reducing the impact of project closures on vulnerable populations.

Next up, Lindsay Barnes, Health Director at Jan Chetna Manch Bokaro (JCMB) in Jharkhand, India, shares an inspiring story about the impact of a midwifery-led model with minimal medical interventions on birth outcomes in rural Jharkhand.
"Chetna Mahila Swasthya Kendra," established by JCMB in 1997, was created to meet local women's demand for quality childbirth care.
This center, open five days a week, is staffed by 11 nurses, 5 trainees, and 8 community healthcare workers—all women from the community, with very low turnover.
Since 2016, over 7,000 women have received childbirth care here, with zero maternal deaths to date.
The most remarkable aspect? This center is community-owned! Women actually take charge as both providers and recipients of care.

🔴LIVE from #MSFsciAsia: Power of community storytelling 🔴
Anisha Singh opens with powerful stories of hope, emphasizing that storytelling is key to complementing science with compassion.
She highlights a recent NTEP survey revealing that 64% of people with TB symptoms are unaware of their condition—an alarming figure, as each person with TB can infect 5–10 others.
While government efforts have made strides in identifying the "missing millions," there is a critical need for community awareness.
She shed light on the digital platform, "My TB Story / Meri TB Ki Kahani," where millions affected by TB can share stories of courage and resilience. With just a phone, internet access, and consent, individuals can contribute their journeys to inspire and educate others.
It is a platform led by the community and is for the community: https://t.co/UPzKb203Vq
