@pablitasan Yes and they just announced their 2020 dates! June 25-28, 2020 in Detroit!!! #MaSSActionReadingGroup
Our hour together has flown by!! Thank you all for participating in #MassActionReadingGroup!
Shout-out to @anniessafatima for co-facilitating with me and @pablitasan and @museum_matters for contributing to the chapter and to the chat.
Now, to dig into these resources...
A6 Kenneth Jones' and Tema Okun's work on white supremacist culture in workspaces pretty much changed my life. Here's a good resource to start with: https://t.co/b5mT7hKI6S #MASSActionReadingGroup
A6 I'm interested in resources on programming/internal professional development aspects of museum ed! Esp. case studies of successful equity-driven adult programs #MASSActionReadingGroup
@pablitasan and the added benefit/necessity that it distributes the work across the institution, rather than asking Education depts to "represent". #MASSActionReadingGroup
Q6 Resource share-out! Which museums/practitioners/authors/conferences are “doing the work” when it comes to museum pedagogy? Where can we learn more about best/innovative practices? What should we be reading next? #MassActionReadingGroup
@pablitasan This is dope. And in non-culturally specific museums, the goal is to get everyone to lead from that framework. As an educator, it shouldn't be so hard to get buy-in to prioritize this internal work. #MASSActionReadingGroup
@pablitasan I wish my culturally specific museum was more like this; I think there's sometimes this desire to be more like other (ie culturally white) museums. But the whole point is we want/are expected to be different! 😢 #MassActionReadingGroup
@lisaiherbert @pablitasan @anniessafatima Sigh! And probably many who self-identify as situated in the "non-racist" zone may benefit from a deeper look within. They may be too quick to self-congratulate... #MassActionReadingGroup
@museum_matters I would really appreciate these resources @museum_matters. Even as (a white) someone who is trying very hard, I need to expand what I can envision for alternatives. #MASSActionReadingGroup
@wonder2know Yes. Investing significantly financially in equity work is one of the most challenging needles to move in museums. As my mom texted me recently while watching the democratic debate: "Talk is cheap!" #MassActionReadingGroup
THIS. Our actions can speak more eloquently to our values and our "whys" and our visions and our utopias more than any email or meeting or training or workshop ever could. #MassActionReadingGroup
A3 White culture is real and the alternatives are real too (will post some resources on this later). For example whiteness breeds conflict avoidance; so in my teaching I try to make sure I don't do that. (2/3) #MASSActionReadingGroup
A3 I think what's so hard is that White people have a hard time imagining what that "radical" shift even looks like, because of the whiteness we've been steeped in and have a vested interest in maintaining (1/3) #MASSActionReadingGroup
@pablitasan I feel like most institutions feel more comfortable in the non-racist zone but shy away from the anti-racism space. And then as @anniessafatima notes, feel very self-congratulatory. #MASSActionReadingGroup
Q5 What are YOUR questions inspired by the chapter? #MassActionReadingGroup
@pablitasan This is so accurate, but it's also sometimes hard to quality -control what white colleagues are doing. I notice a lot of self-congratulating and co-opting, which is exhausting. #MASSActionReadingGroup
