***Unusual But GENIUS Mindset For 3rd and Long Defense*** I watched every second of #MaddenSuperWeekend. And I noticed a common pattern... When an offensive player got to a 3rd and 15 they were almost ALWAYS guaranteed to get half back or more. Why? The general thought process here is the defensive player will play back to protect the sticks. So the smart move by the offensive player is to call a play that gets half the yards back. You accept that a high level player won't give all the yards back so you aim to make the 4th down manageable. THEN on 4th down you can expect a more aggressive defense since the defense knows you only need a few yards to convert. 👉BUT what if the defensive player decided to play 2⃣ steps ahead? This reminded me of one the best defensive players I've ever played and watched was Serious Moe. He had the most interesting/genius approach to these 3rd and long defensive situations. Vs. everyone else - I could close my eyes and get half the yards back or more w/o a 2nd thought. (And same for any offensive player this past weekend in those same spots) But what Moe would do is *sometimes* play a 3rd and 15 like a 4th and 2 b/c he understood the general thought process of a high level offensive player in those situations. Meaning instead of cover 2 mable send 3 with the CBs backed off... He'd have a tendency of sending 6 with hard flats or another variation of aggressive defense. And any good player would often fall into the trap b/c NO ONE expects someone to play a 3rd and 15 that aggressively. A great example of this philosophy is when he played Henry in the M20 regs championship - specifically his closeout drive on defense to win. Context: It was 29-29 in 4th with ~2 minutes left and Henry had ball at his own 20. Moe desperately needed a stop or he was cooked. 2nd and 7 after a run: You may expect a more aggressive defense yet Moe ran stock man. 3rd and 2: After a super passive defensive call - it'd be reasonable to expect another passive call yet Moe blitzed everyone and left no deep blues on field. Caught Henry off guard. 4th and 6: If someone left no deep blues on field on a 3rd and 2 surely they'll play ultra-aggressive with game on line, right? Nope. Henry called a play that would've worked vs an aggressive man + no deep blue defense. Unfortunately for him Moe called stock cover 3 with a spy making Henry's playcall look ridiculous (even though it wasn't if you watched closely) I credit it to high level manipulation on Moe's part for being steps ahead. 👉Morale of story: Gain a deep understanding of how high level players generally think in specific game situations. Use that to your advantage and be aggressive when your opponent expects conservative and conservative when they expect aggressive. Sometimes it may not be a bad idea to sell out for a "half back" playcall on 3rd and 15. I've always been a good situationally aggressive player myself and opponents know it but it fucks with them more than me b/c I've mastered when to be aggressive. Now I realize very few will enjoy this type of content but like ♥️ if you did to encourage me to do more posts like this. #MaddenSuperWeekend Takeaways: - @blakem_22 and @SHORZEE are goated for putting together a grand offseason tourney like this - rpo’s are stupid - @Mayzomatic is a great entertainer and deserves a shot on the @EAMaddenNFL_MCS broadcast especially if paired with a Madden pro. Him and @troublejalen complemented each other well. - rpo’s are stupid
