🇪🇺 EU FINES U.S. TECH MORE THAN IT TAXES ITS OWN
In 2024, the European Union quietly crossed a bizarre milestone: it earned more from punishing American tech giants than from taxing Europe’s own.
EU regulators pulled in roughly €3.8 billion in fines from Apple, Meta, Amazon, Uber, and LinkedIn, topping the €3.2 billion paid in corporate income tax by all publicly listed European internet and tech firms combined.
Apple’s €1.8 billion App Store fine alone rivaled SAP’s entire annual tax bill.
Meta’s €1 billion GDPR hit and a slew of mid-tier penalties filled the rest.
It’s a headline made for drama, but also a window into Europe’s economic reality.
The bloc’s enforcement machine has become both a political weapon and a revenue stream.
The EU can’t seem to produce global-scale tech champions, so it taxes innovation by proxy, via American success.
Still, context matters: fines are one-off punishments, not sustainable revenue, and U.S. firms already pay tens of billions in VAT, wages, and local taxes across Europe.
Yet optics rule politics.
