Remember the days when we were told to 'fully discharge' our #batteries before recharging them? It was a common practice, fueled by a belief known as the #memoryeffect. But is it really true? Let's debunk this myth and learn the truth about #batterycare.
🚨 What You Need to Know!
Memory effect, also known as battery effect, lazy battery effect, or battery memory. The memory effect is a phenomenon that occurs in some rechargeable batteries, causing them to lose their capacity and longevity over time.
🚩 True memory effect
The term "memory" came from an aerospace nickel-cadmium application in which the cells were repeatedly discharged to 25% of available capacity (give or take 1%) by exacting computer control, then recharged to 100% capacity without overcharge. This long-term, repetitive cycle regime, with no provision for overcharge, resulted in a loss of capacity beyond the 25% discharge point.
True memory cannot exist if any one (or more) of the following conditions holds:
• Batteries achieve full overcharge.
• Discharge is not exactly the same each cycle, within plus or minus 3%
• Discharge is to less than 1.0 volts per cell
True memory-effect is specific to sintered-plate nickel-cadmium cells, and is exceedingly difficult to reproduce, especially in lower ampere-hour cells. In one particular test program designed to induce the effect, none was found after more than 700 precisely-controlled charge/discharge cycles. In the program, spirally-wound one-ampere-hour cells were used. In a follow-up program, 20-ampere-hour aerospace-type cells were used on a similar test regime; memory effects were observed after a few hundred cycles.
❓ How it happens
The memory effect happens when a battery is partially discharged and then recharged before it's fully depleted. The battery "remembers" the energy requirement of the previous charge and charges to that level instead of its full capacity.
The memory effect is caused by a number of factors, including the reaction of the metal and electrolyte to form a salt, and how that salt dissolves and metal is replaced during recharging.
📌 Which batteries are affected
The memory effect is most common in older batteries, such as (NiCd) and (NiMH) batteries. Newer batteries, like lithium-ion and lithium polymer, don't usually experience the memory effect.
❗How to mitigate it
The memory effect can be mitigated by diligent battery use: fully discharging & recharging. One can recondition batteries with a memory effect by deep discharge and charge cycles. Some chargers have specific battery reconditioning modes as well.
🔖 In general, most people with a decent charger don't have to worry about memory effect any longer. Only consistent partial charges tend to produce the effect. In fact, draining the capacity completely is worse for the cells overall longevity & only advisable by those seeking maximum voltage for purposes such as remote-control operations.
