For day 5 of #merseyriversweek we were joined by staff from @unitedutilities and volunteers for a Balsam Bash in Sankey Valley Park. We controlled balsam from the edge of Stanley Bank Meadow SSSI to help protect this important grassland habitat
Great job by all the team π

#MerseyRiversWeek Day 4 included a balsam bash on River Bollin with Friends of Bollin Bowdon volunteers & @CECRangers
Himalayan balsam is a very invasive non-native plant that loves water. It has shallow roots so river banks are more likely to erode & stops native plants growing.

Join us on Thursday 4 July for a balsam bash along the Sankey Brook in St Helens
10am to 3pm

Day 3 of #MerseyRiversWeek with a litter pick along the River Irk in Manchester. Fly tipping is a major issue for the Irk valley as well as littering.
We are working with local communities to clean up the river & improve river health through our #loveyourriverirk programme.

Flytipped materials on river banks ends up in the river over time. River Irk in Manchester is blighted by flytipping & needs addressing through enforcement action.
Community volunteers can do so much with litter picks but we need more help to remove flytipping.

Like many of our urban rivers, the Medlock was heavily impacted by industrialisation. Restoring rivers is challenging with old weirs & mill structures but opportunities greatest in river valley parks like Lees Nature Park managed by @OldhamCouncil
