The #Metema-#Gallabat border crossing between Ethiopia and Sudan reopened today, 21 October, 2024, after being closed since early September due to security concerns, according to Amhara Media Corporation. The closure followed the #Fano militia's takeover of Metema, prompting Sudan's Al-Qadarif state to close the Gallabat side.
According to the report , the reopening was the result of "weeks of discussions" between Ethiopian and Sudanese officials. A "joint temporary security force" has been formed to ensure stability and allow trade and cross-border movement.

Hundreds stranded at #Sudan-#Ethiopia border as conflict intensifies
Over 700 Sudanese nationals are stranded at the #Gallabat-#Metema border crossing between Sudan and Ethiopia as violence escalates in a nearby Ethiopian region, according to officials in eastern Sudan.
About 400 people are currently in Metema Yohannes on the Ethiopian side, while 321 are in Gallabat on the Sudanese side. The conflict in Ethiopia’s #Amhara region, involving clashes between the military and the #Fano militia, has also increased the risks for Sudanese refugees in the area.
Authorities in Sudan’s Al-Qadarif state had earlier closed the Gallabat border crossing after the Fano militia took control of the Ethiopian town of Metema. Sudanese officials permitted disarmed Ethiopian federal police and army personnel to cross into Sudan, while Fano militia members allowed stranded Sudanese nationals to enter Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has since bolstered its military presence along the border, including operations to arrest Fano leaders in Metema, according to military sources. Meanwhile, Sudan has also increased its military presence, keeping the border closed to commercial traffic.

The Metema-#Gallabat border crossing between the two countries faces frequent closures due to localized tensions in the area. Since conflict erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) last year, thousands of Sudanese have fled into Ethiopia.
