Decisions about medication should always be made under the care of a medical provider. Women whose doctors advise going off medication should consider adding additional support like extra psychotherapy, more help at home, and action plans for sleep. #MomsNeedToKnow
Re: psychiatric medications in pregnancy. Yesterday’s #medthread was not meant to be a comprehensive informed consent. It was meant to address a common myth. Please see this #MomsNeedToKnow post from last week for more on the nuances. #MONAConf2019
Today’s #MomsNeedToKnow post - planning for pregnancy. There’s a myth that #pregnancy is protective against mental health issues. This is simply not true. Let’s dig into this. With @MotherhoodUS & Jamina Bone who made this fantastic graphic! #psychtwitter #medthread 1/6

@amobeirne @MotherhoodUS @PostpartumHelp @Marcenortham @TheMarceSociety @MMHLA2 @NAMICommunicate @ppstresscenter The key when it comes to perinatal psychiatry and meds in pregnancy is that exposure to UNTREATED psychiatric illness also has its own risks to mom and baby. #MomsNeedToKnow
Taking an antidepressant during the perinatal period doesn’t mean you have take it for the rest of your life. Perinatal psychiatrists generally recommend staying on meds for 6 months to a year. #MomsNeedToKnow
Antidepressants work on brain circuitry to rewire the brain. When you are depressed or anxious, the parts of your brain that feel emotions are hyper-aroused. The parts of your brain that support planning and problem-solving are more difficult to access. #MomsNeedToKnow
The truth is – if you are on the right medication, at the right dose – it will not change your personality. Depression and anxiety change your personality. The right medication makes it easier to find the thread back to yourself. #MomsNeedToKnow
If I take medication for a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, will I turn into a different person? Today’s #MomsNeedToKnow is all about antidepressants in pregnancy. With @MotherhoodUS and Jamina Bone.

5. Perinatal psychotherapists (social workers or counselors): These mental health providers also provide psychotherapy. Unlike psychologists, they don’t have a doctorate, but many have years of experience working with moms. #MomsNeedToKnow 7/8
3. Pediatricians: medical doctors who take care of children. May offer screening at well-child visits & can provide referrals to maternal mental health specialists. #MomsNeedToKnow 5/8
2. Obstetrician/Gynecologists + Nurse Midwives: OBGYNs are medical doctors specializing in medical care to pregnant & postpartum women. Nurse Midwives deliver babies. Many OBs & midwives are knowledgeable about PMADS & prescribe antidepressant medication. #MomsNeedToKnow 3/8
There are many different types of mental health providers available in the perinatal period. It can be overwhelming to figure out who does what. Today’s #MomsNeedToKnow is a quick reference. With @MotherhoodUS & Jamina Bone. #PsychTwitter #MedThread. 1/8

If you are experiencing MMH issues, seek out these professionals:
1. Psychiatrist. Medical doctor (MD) who can prescribe medication; some also offer talk therapy.
2. Therapist. Can be a psychologist, social worker, or counselor; all provide talk therapy.

The frequency of IVF treatment & perceived stress of the process were associated with the depression. Social support & family functioning were both protective factors. #MomsNeedToKnow 6/7
