#monocotmonday found this cool sedge while wandering in some bottomland forests: cherokee sedge (Carex cherokeensis). another of the green danglers, but this one is only found in the southeastern u.s. the brownish, remnant styles give it a cool, shaggy appearance #botany #sedge
#monocotmonday the drooping woodland sedge (Carex arctata) is a member of section Hymenochlaenae, or as i lovingly refer to them, the green danglers. in addition to the dangliness, its narrow shape, long perigynia beaks and awned scales are usually enough to get the ID #sedges
i learned bearded shorthusk (Brachyelytrum erectum) by the much more whimsical name of “stained glass grass.” if you hold a leaf up to the light, there are tiny lateral veins linking up the standard parallel grass venation so that it makes little green windowpanes! #monocotmonday
#monocotmonday means sexy sedges, and i think the yellow sedge (Carex flava) definitely fits the bill. a fan of all kinds of calcareous wetlands, you can find it basking in the sun with long, angled perigynia beaks (the lower ones point down) and contrasting brown scales #sedges
an edible sedge, you say? the golden sedge (Carex aurea) has perigynia that ripen to a lovely gold and then orange through the season. at maturity they’re surprisingly pleasant to munch compared to most others species. fleshy, mildly sweet and nutty! #monocotmonday #sedge #nature
still trying to learn my non-carex sedges like this bald spikerush (Eleocharis erythropoda) on #monocotmonday. the characters are a bit nitpicky, but 2-parted style, round culms, rhizomatous nature, and my subjective interpretation of scale shape got me here 🔎 #botany #nature
#monocotmonday means a look at the delightfully round and plump perigynia of the soft-leaved sedge (Carex disperma). cool cedar swamps and boggy woods are its favorite haunts, and the spiderwebs and drops of dew are really giving off some serious vibes. #sedgehead #sedges #botany
#monocotmonday feat the first n american #sedge shown to be ant-dispersed in a paper by handel back in 1976! the long-stalked sedge (Carex pedunculata) has namesake stalks that dangle at ant height, delicious oily elaiosomes and everything else an ant could want #nature #botany
#monocotmonday this is an awesome sedge of swamps and shorelines and all sorts of wet places. this particular one is from a nice, intact bog filled with a bunch of boggy buddies like swamp loosestrife, black chokeberry,…

#monocotmonday it’s tawny cottongrass (Eriophorum virginicum), and its fluff-on-a-stick vibes work really well in a nice peaty fen. the subtending bracts and single mass of short-stalked flower spikes separate this one from its similarly floofy congenerics #nature #sedges #botany
#monocotmonday another non-carex sedge, this one is the surprisingly showy (for a sedge) white beaksedge (Rhynchospora alba). it loves acidic wetlands like sphagnum bogs, and can be found showing off its whitened glumes in the summer and into the fall. #sedges #botany #nature
#monocotmonday here’s a non-carex sedge that’s a common denizen of wetlands, often growing partly submerged. it’s called three-way sedge (Dulichium arundinaceum) because of its very orderly three-ranked leaves, which are most easily seen from above. #botany #sedges #nature
#monocotmonday phragmites is damn near everywhere, but every once in a while i stumble across the native species. american reed (Phragmites americanus) differs by forming less dense stands, having reddish stems with loose leaf sheaths, and a few other details. #nature #botany
been gone for a while and almost forgot #monocotmonday! so here’s a charismatic sedge that even non-sedge heads can appreciate: bladder sedge (Carex intumescens). it’s a member of the section lupulinae, known for their large and inflated perigynia 🔥🔥🔥 #botany #sedges #nature
it’s #monocotmonday and i need more sedge help! i took a photo of this one thinking it was carex stipata. i also grabbed a quick shot of the leaf bases/sheaths because i remembered they’re supposed to be important for…

#monocotmonday brings us a rush this time! i love these often overlooked and underloved plants that make up the third group of the graminoid trifecta. while grasses and sedges have sometimes ridiculously derived floral…

#monocotmonday... which might just turn into me asking people’s opinions about sedges? anyway, i’m thinking this one is carex communis. its got a terminal male spike, with a few lateral female spikes (the lower of which is…

A yellow-headed blackbird uses today’s #monocotmonday, the common cattail (Typha latifolia). Cattails are a very common and recognizable monocot. It can grow to 3m tall and can absorb pollutants from wetlands
