This is an example of brickwork mortar from an estate in Gloucestershire. Surprisingly, the high magnesium content found by analysis suggests that the binder used is likely dolomitic lime. Dolomitic Limestones are usually found in Yorkshire and the East Midlands. #mortaranalysis
A medieval lime mortar viewed under transmitted plane polarised light (x25). The blue colour shows resin-impregnated pores which aids assessment of porosity by digital image analysis.

We produce a wide range of ready mixed lime bedding and pointing mortars, hair and fibre reinforced basecoat plasters, finish plasters and external renders, all made using our mature chalk lime putty.

We've analysed mortar from the spectacular Rakaia Gorge Bridge in New Zealand to inform repairs to the concrete structure. Opened in 1939, the bridge sits against one of the most beautiful backdrops of any bridge in the world. #mortaranalysis #bridges #civilengineering #rakaia
We're pleased to announce that our historic materials specialist has been invited to speak in the session on Quantitative Microscopy in Earth, Planetary and Archaeological Sciences. Looking forward to a week of #microscopy in #Manchester. #petrography #mortaranalysis @RSKGroup

Let's play spot the secondary deposits! This lime mortar has some really well-formed dog-spur calcite hiding in a void space. #ThinSectionThursday #mortaranalysis #petrography
Siding with #TeamOlivine today because look at it! (FYI - this image was borrowed from our historic mortar specialist's MS thesis) #ThinSectionThursday #mortaranalysis #Pompeii

Today's #ThinSectionThursday is actually a 3-fer. It's like the secondary calcite didn't know what to do with itself, so it did a bit of everything. #petrography #mortaranalysis
There's a lot of geological process happening here, and we're adding this one to our "Flowers are Pretty" series. #ThinSectionThursday #petrography #MortarAnalysis
What's a bit of partial replacement between friends? Found this in an old mortar with a quartz, limestone, and mudstone aggregate assemblage. #mortaranalysis #ThinSectionThursday
Today's #ThinSectionThursday is a cautionary tale. Don't let samples sit around for too long or you can get wild NaCl. #mortaranalysis
#MortarAnalysis of a sample from a very old bridge that local lore says is haunted. #ThinSectionThursday
The interfacial zone is where the magic happens. #MortarAnalysis (a hand polished the slide for SEM, so it counts for #ThinSectionThursday)
