What a Bonnie day to be at 630m collecting downy birch seed in the Cairngorms. #MountainBirchProject
Last week the #Mountain #Birch Group @MontaneWoodland visited a very special high-altitude woodland remnant at 700+m above Gleann Eanaich in the Cairngorms. @PinkfootedGus was in his element with the best seed collection he'd ever had here! #MountainBirchProject @ReforestingScot
Pretty much the case with anything palatable in the Scottish uplands. Dwarf birch, downy willow, aspen, goldenrod, alpine blue-sow-thistle, globeflower... In fact even the likes of downy birch is not growing in all its potential niches! (plug for the #MountainBirchProject!)
In case you missed it, @MossyEarth posted the first video about the #MountainBirchProject just over a week ago, where I take Rob out into the hills to do some seed collection & introduce this project that they're funding & I'm leading for @ReforestingScot. https://t.co/jKnY5BXMUi
There's a lovely remnant #upland #birchwood to be found on the slopes of Ben Loyal. These trees are showing just how well they can grow in this far north mountain environment, & highlighting the potential for us to have more #birchbelt habitat in Scotland.

Four tree species over 620m at this site visited for the #MountainBirchProject the other day. Mostly rowan but also downy birch (including seed!), aspen & grey willow. First spotted it in February 2018 when it looked quite different!
One of the highest seed-producing downy birches (Betula pubescens) in Scotland at 720m. An incredible individual. Highest I've visited but there's one by Loch A'an at about 740m. A few more of these scattered about with some downy willow & juniper please... #MountainBirchProject
Great to get out into the hills on Monday with Dave at @ElsomsTreesLtd for the #MountainBirchProject. Unfortunately we found no seed on any birch trees over 500m so collected some rowan from around 690m. @CairngormsCo staff had better luck over the hill. Plenty more to check!
@Watts_SH - no record breaker but a very healthy krummholz pine growing just above 850 metres on Beinn Bhreac! #MountainBirchProject
@KingGuiding Hi John - great find! You're right that there are less of these records in Northern Scotland. I've got a record of a Downy Birch at 797m on Carn Dearg near Loch More from @BSBIbotany. Have you submitted yours to the #mountainbirchproject @ReforestingScot https://t.co/ewXP2FRECA
Seen any broadleafed trees above 600 metres? #MountainBirchProject would love to hear from you - and speaking from experience, it's dead easy to submit a report.

Trees add so much to our Scottish mountain landscape - the charity @ReforestingScot is after help from walkers/climbers/skiers to submit pics of birch & other native trees in the wild #MountainBirchProject #WalkClimbSki @Mountain_Scot @walkhighlands @TGOMagazine @ScotsMagazine
@PinkfootedGus @matthay44 @ReforestingScot worth a visit for the #mountainbirchproject? What do you think on the ID - Birch or Rowan?
More evidence that mature trees can grow at altitude in the western Scottish Highlands, demonstrating a lost habitat but also potential for mountain woodland #restoration. 📷 by Lewis Taylor c.650m in the Mamores. #mountainbirchproject #highmountaintrees #mountainwoodland
Not a very successful #MountainBirchProject trip today. No birch over 520m & these rowans were only at 572m, which is high for Scotland but not high enough for true mountain birch woodland really. Nice to see some oceanic liverworts clinging on though.
@ChrissieRaasay @ScotlandTBP @ASRainforest @ScotRewilding @treesforlifeuk For the #MountainBirchProject we're specifically looking for trees that are growing over 650m altitude, sometimes allowing for stuff down to 600m. These trees are specially adapted for life at such altitude. We've had some trees pointed out by stalkers which is great.
Please read the latest @ScotRewilding story, on the #mountainbirchproject with @ReforestingScot @ScotlandTBP. One of a growing number of initiatives recognising the vital need to restore mountain woodland habitats! #citizenscience
