1783 MOVING TRANSPARENCIES ‘ROULEAUX TRANSPARENTS’ LOUIS CARROGIS DE CARMONTELLE (1717-1806) #DeCarmontelle (self-portrait below) invented the #RollingTransparency or #MovingTransparency, a contemporary cousin of the Panorama and early ancestor of the #MotionPicture. They were not projected. They were viewed directly, typically through a wooden viewing box or frame, sometimes with a lens or aperture to control the field of view. The illusion depended on continuous lateral motion, not intermittency. They simulate cinematic continuity without frames, projection, or mechanical animation.
