DIGGING DEEP FOR THE #StanChartNairobiMarathon The race that almost never happened! I started the run 1 hr 47 mins after the official start meaning I had to weave through the 21k and 10k traffic (you don't want to be caught in it when running a 42k). The late start was coupled with travel and work in the last couple of weeks, which meant I was not able to train as well as I planned. Lastly, but most importantly, due to unavoidable conditions, Muthomi was not able to join in, inspite of us registering a full two months ago. As I joined over 30,000 runners, I was reminded by the great Eliud Kipchoge that "When you finish a marathon you can achieve anything in life" and "A marathon is the only place on Earth where you can experience that running pain, the moment you start and finish, you'll never be the same". And so with all these challenges, I had to dig deep. The sun was hot, the tarmac burnt and I could feel the tiredness in my body. Not forgetting that 14km of elevation from Km 20 to Km 34 when runners turn back to head for the finish. Last year, I did a PB of 4hrs 50 mins. This year, I finished it in 6hrs 01 mins (according to Garmin) and/or in 5hrs 50 mins (according to Strava) which shows the impact good preparations, good rest and good readiness has on a 42km run, it makes all the difference. 1 hr slower means 1min 39 secs slower per KM across 42kms. And so we live, run and learn. The highlight was me running for Muthomi. Every kilometer had me thinking how nicely he would've enjoyed this route with his bike, I'm not sure about him handling that elevation but if he did well at the Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese then this would've been easy peasy for him. And so, run I did, with his running number and mine on my shirt. It was great to be back but I run for Muthomi and that's what kept me going. Uganda was very well represented with estimates putting it at 300+ runners. The marathon last year was not good for the 42k runners as supplies, hydration and ambulances were missing, it seems the organisers listened and gave a good account of this, even us who were at the very end of the pack. I believe I reached Uhuru Gardens in the bottom 20 (I need to double check), but finish I did. My last 3 KMs were with a gentleman called Oloo who was doing a full marathon for his first time and we shared interesting talks about our experiences on the road. Running continues to teach me a lot through the pain and overcoming challenges as they come along the way. I also noticed sponsors were more this year and more engaged. Kudos to my Marketing Communications colleagues for showing why brands need to keep showing up and engaging at such events. Running also teaches me the importance of pushing boundaries and moving with purpose, because every stride counts. #StanChartNairobiMarathon
