Gains were recorded across all sectors last week amidst the rollout of Q2'25 financial results. The gains were led by Industrial goods, insurance and consumer goods stocks, sustaining the month-long bullish streak in the market. Consequently, the #NGXASI closed above the 134,000-point mark, with a positive market sentiment.
The @ngxgrp All-Share Index (ASI) rose 2.18% to close at 134,452.93 points on Friday, up from 131,585.66 points. As of Friday, July 25, 2025, the market capitalisation was at N85.06trn, while the year-to-date (YTD) return closed at 30.63%, with an improvement in market sentiment, which strengthened to 0.40x from -0.12x previously.
The Sectoral Indexes were all bullish last week, save for the Asem index, which closed flat. The NGX Industrial Goods Index climbed 4.66%, the NGX Insurance Index advanced 3.07%, the NGX Consumer Goods Index rose 2.81%, the NGX Banking Index increased 1.84%, and the NGX Oil and Gas Index rose 0.87%.
In the banking sector, Lead Capital and @futureviewgroup are optimistic about most stocks, while Capital Bancorp recommends a cautious “Hold” for most of the banking stocks. @Afr_Research alternated between “Sell,” “Buy,” and “Accumulate” recommendations for stocks in the sector. In the consumer goods sector, Meristem and Lead Capital issue positive “Buy” and “Hold” recommendations for selected stocks, suggesting a positive outlook for the industry. In contrast, @Afrinvest suggests “Sell” options, while Capital Bancorp continues to recommend “Hold.”
In the Industrial goods sector, @DangoteCement received a “Buy/Accumulate” recommendation from most Capital Market Operators #CMOs. @Lafarge_Africa #WAPCO, on the other hand, received a “Buy” rating from Capital Bancorp and Lead Capital, but a “Sell” rating from Afrinvest, and a “Hold” rating by Meristem.
In the Oil and Gas sector, Afrinvest has a cautious stance, labelling most stocks as under review (UR). Meristem, on the other hand, is bullish on many stocks, while Lead Capital offers a mixed view, fluctuating between “Sell” and “Buy” ratings.
In July, the banking sector saw @GroupEcobank #ETI receiving consistent “Buy” recommendations from Afrinvest, Meristem, and Lead Capital. The company has had a 3.56% increase in its share price month-to-date (MTD). Capital Bancorp advised a “Hold” on ETI, which is a rather cautious perspective. @MyFCMB also got a “Buy” consensus from Capital Bancorp, Meristem, and Lead Capital but faced a “Reduce” rating from Afrinvest. Despite the mixed signals, FCMB’s share price has risen by an impressive 5.95% MTD. In the consumer goods sector, @BuaFoods has mostly received a “Hold” rating from Capital Bancorp and Lead Capital, while Afrinvest recommended an “Accumulate” stance, but its share price remained unchanged MTD. Meanwhile, #INTBREW received a “Hold” from Capital Bancorp and a “Sell” from Afrinvest, indicating differing opinions on its future performance.
WAPCO, @BUACement, and DANGCEM received consistent “Buy” ratings from Lead Capital for July. While BUACEMENT received a stable “Hold” from Capital Bancorp, Afrinvest issued more of “Sell” recommendations for WAPCO during the same period. DANGCEM also had a “Buy” rating from Capital Bancorp, but its share price declined by 2.05% MTD. In contrast, WAPCO and BUACEMENT performed exceptionally well, with gains of 43.41% and 41.51% MTD, respectively.
Afrinvest issued under-review (UR) recommendations for most stocks in the Oil & Gas sector, while maintaining a bullish outlook on ARADEL. The position aligns with those of @CapitalBancorp, @LeadCapitalplc_, and @MeristemNigeria, who also hold a positive view for @aradelholdings, despite a 1.46% decline in the oil firm’s share price MTD. Lead Capital and Meristem were also optimistic about "Total," which saw no change in its share price. Meanwhile, @Japaul_Group #JapaulGOLD surged by 26.11% MTD, while Capital Bancorp opted for more "Hold" recommendations during the month.
While market sentiment remains positive and the risk of a correction is possible, market analysts remain upbeat, highlighting opportunities across various sectors. The Sectoral Index performed largely bullish last week, with the NGX Industrial Goods Index climbing 19.17%, the NGX Banking Index increasing by 5.36%, and Capital Bancorp, Afrinvest, Lead Capital Plc, and Cowry Asset Management rising 1.34%. The NGX Insurance Index fell by 3.65%, and the NGX Oil and Gas Index declined by 0.76%. As a result, market sentiment weakened to 4.4x from 7.4x.
This week, the banking sector experienced a positive shift from Capital Market Operators (CMOs), with several banks receiving "Buy" recommendations, including @CapitalBancorp, @Afrinvest, @LeadCapitalplc_, and @CowryAssetMgt. This indicates rising investor confidence, particularly in @theaccesscorp and @UBAGroup, which are viewed as strong investment opportunities.
The Consumer Goods sector presented a more cautious stance overall, with CMOs predominantly issuing "Hold" recommendations, followed by a mix of "Sell" and "Buy". #DANGSUGAR received an increased number of "Sell" recommendations despite an increase in its share price.
In the Industrial Sector, analysts issued more “Buy” recommendations this week, reflecting a positive outlook on various stocks, particularly @DangoteCement, which received strong endorsement from CMOs. “Hold” recommendations were also common where analysts advsised investors to remain cautious.
In the ICT sector, “Buy” recommendations predominated as confidence grew in its potential.
Analysts showed an increased number of “Buy” recommendations in the Oil and Gas sector this week, with @aradelholdings receiving strong endorsements from CMOs. In addition to these favourable views, there were also mixed “Hold” and “Sell” recommendations for other companies in the sector.
The Agriculture sector primarily reflected a cautious stance, with “Hold” recommendations predominating.
