Our discussion today with the Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance team, @gavi, centered around ongoing efforts, in line with the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal Investment Program, #NHSRIP, to reform the country’s healthcare system. The focus was on enhancing routine immunization and reducing the number of zero-dose children through collaboration with subnational entities, including traditional leaders, as a critical step towards improving overall population health outcomes.
Thank you, Senator Dr. Sania Nishtar, @SaniaNishtar, for prioritizing Nigeria as a base country for GAVI’s work just 14 days into your new role. Your clear commitment to supporting the sector-wide framework to improve vaccination rates and reduce disparities, nationally and within communities, aligns with the new path we have charted for our primary healthcare system.
As agreed, we will work as One Team to strengthen governance, boost transparency and accountability, and address fiscal decentralization as warranted by Nigeria’s federal system. Most importantly, we will deliberately enlist the active involvement of our citizens in decision-making and implementation processes to ensure that the healthcare system is reflective of and responsive to the needs of the population.
Moving forward, the partnership between Nigeria and Gavi will be crucial in shaping a healthier future for the country. It’s a journey towards a stronger healthcare system that can withstand the present and future challenges, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to improved quality healthcare in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu @officialABAT and the #UHC.
Effective governance of our health system architecture is critical to delivering improved quality health outcomes for all Nigerians as envisioned in the Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative #NHSRIP.
To succeed in this effort, we are fostering better coordination and partnerships across Federal and State departments and other agencies, anchored by @NafdacAgency, to increase transparency, effectiveness, and accountability of our regulatory processes.
My hybrid meeting today with the DG NAFDAC @DGatNAFDAC and members of the of Federal Task Force on Foods and Drugs, consisting of State Commissioners of Health, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, @PCN_Registry, and other agencies was to listen to their stories, successes, and challenges as well as recommendations on policy gaps that need to be filled to strengthen regulation.
It is good to see the seriousness with which NAFDAC, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, State Commissioners, State Directors of Pharmaceutical Services, and other collaborating entities tackle the issue of fake and adulterated food and drugs, including substandard cosmetics and allied products in our markets. This is as it should be considering the exploding consequences of incidence of non-communicable diseases from these products.
Indeed, there may be connections between environmental exposure to chemicals, adulterated substances, and the distribution of unregulated foods and drugs, with the increase in diseases such as cancers, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease.
And on the side of unlocking health care value chain, this could negatively impact our efforts, because if we don't have a well regulated system, we won’t be able to attract or retain veritable investors or manufacturers as the counterfeit flow will undermine them.
Going forward, we are ramping up collaborative efforts between the federal government and states, recognizing the decentralized system we operate as a country. This is in addition to strengthening NAFDAC, federal and state task forces to address environmental and food safety issues.
Leveraging the Sector-Wide Approach, we will seek collaborations and support from international organizations such as the Global Fund, @GlobalFund, to enhance regulatory capacity.
On our part, through the strong commitment of Mr President @officialABAT, we will continue to prioritize effective governance of the health sector and, within available resources, try to secure adequate funding, including budget allocation for effective regulation nationwide.
