Finally he correctly reflects on the need to address the economic plight of women. This sharply raises the need to urgently redress the injustice of excluding caregivers from the Covid grant- something acknowledged by a Presidency representative at the #NIDSCRAMWave3 launch

Kate Philip says it's problematic to trade off benefits as we have complex & not entirely well-targeted social protection. Links to social protection for women should not be linked to status as caregiver as then cohort is excluded from support. #NIDSCRAMWave3 #berthacentre
Rudi Dicks @PresidencyZA these #NIDSCRAMWave3 results help policymakers make evidence-based decisions. Retrospectively, were right decisions made balancing need & fiscal pressures? Mondli Mbhele @The_DSD stressing need for #systemschange for sustainable livelihoods @BerthaCentre

Access to free school meals has ⬆️ since July 2020, however they have still not returned to pre-pandemic levels, despite all school grades being ‘open’. In Nov 2020, only 48% of individuals indicated that a child received a free school meal in the past week. #NIDSCRAMWave3

Today we released 11 #NIDSCRAMWave3 Working Papers on everything from employment to hunger to mental health.... They're all available here: https://t.co/elR0Peo4ZZ 🤓

Given the reopening of schools in the last quarter of 2020, both women and men spent significantly fewer hours on childcare in Oct compared to June 2020. Regardless, childcare continues to disproportionately and negatively affect women’s labour market prospects. #NIDSCRAMWave3
The jobs recovery between April and Oct 2020 was substantial for both men and women, although it appears to have been *slower for women*, who remained behind men in terms of reaching their pre-Covid employment and working hours levels. #NIDSCRAMWave3

According to the #NIDSCRAMWave3 data, 85% of smokers (5.7 million) continued smoking during the tobacco sales ban & only 8% (536 000) quit. Half of those who quit started smoking again when the ban was lifted.
#Mentalhealth in SA has deteriorated. between July and Dec 2020 there was a significant ⬆️ in the % of people screening positive for depression, from 24% to 29%. Those in formal employment were found to be most protected compared to others. #NIDSCRAMWave3
Although there has been a nationwide deterioration in #mentalhealth, this has been highest for those experiencing hunger. Those experiencing weekly hunger were more likely to screen positive for depressive symptoms, and this relationship has strengthened. #NIDSCRAMWave3

Child hunger has now ⬆️ across the country, returning to the highest levels of the ‘hard-lockdown’ in May 2020. Child hunger decreased from a high of 15% in May/Jun to 12% in Jul/Aug 2020, returning to its highest level of 16% (1 in 6 households) in Nov/Dec 2020. #NIDSCRAMWave3
Job recovery was stronger for those with more education, especially among the youth. The positive correlation between education and employment was also found for prime-age adults (25-40 years), but not for older adults (41-55 years). #NIDSCRAMWave3
Despite the jobs recovery, #NIDSCRAMWave3 shows that there has been substantial ‘churning’ in the labour market. of those who lost their jobs in April 2020, only half were employed again by Oct 2020. The labour market now no longer looks the same as it did before the pandemic.

#NIDSCRAMWave3 job recovery results are consistent with @StatsSA monthly production and sales data, used for GDP calculations. Similar to SA, a number of comparable countries have also experienced ‘bounce-backs’ in employment (to varying degrees), incl. Brazil, Colombia, Ghana...
