1/2 Tūī sipping the last nectar of the day in the evening light. It is 8pm, these long sunny evenings of almost summer allow the birds to feed for longer, just when they have nests to build and chicks to feed. >>>>

Harvesting nectar from Harakeke flowers now a daily event for as long as they last... 🧡 Many more are still tight bud.

Tui birds play a crucial role in pollinating New Zealand's native flowers, ensuring the survival of many plant species. They're not just pretty faces; they're ecosystem heroes! https://t.co/0yu91THZOm #BirdsOfNZ #TuiBird #NZNativeBirds #Birds

Pūkeko enjoying a late lunch by the lake. They always make me laugh. "In contrast to their smooth-scaled legs, pūkeko's knees are knobbly and grey, bringing to mind a skinny jogger wearing knee supports." (The Five Acre Forest p.12).

Tauhou out in force this morning. One of the many qualities of kānuka is the abundance of their grub and bug bars for the birds 😁

The gangs all here. Very frisky this evening 😀 And pīwakawaka in reflective mood is not prepared to share.

Cards and letters all done now 😄 and I notice that the stamp for overseas mail this year features our chirpy wee pīwakawaka and pioneering woody shrub poroporo (Solanum)

Good morning 🙃 Going to be a dull windy day, but there's bound to be some sun beams popping out somewhere.
My task today is to write Christmas letters with the optimism that they will arrive at their destinations sooner or later 🤞

Tūī can't get enough of harakeke nectar. Here s/he is this evening on the supper run. Every funnel was dipped into and one or two were delicately forced open 😃

For #flowersonfriday it's got to be flax, harakeke, and so many more to come. Can you spot the bee with paniers of bright orange harakeke pollen?
If you want more natives in your garden don't throw out bread for the birds. Most NZ natives are nectar drinkers. The imports like the grain in bread and take over the garden. Try using sugar water or similar to keep the natives happy and imports out.

If I'm completely honest the preliminary results of the New Zealand Garden Bird Survey are a bit grim.
Only 3 of the top 10 counted birds are natives.
What effect are exotic birds having on the recovery of native birds and wider indigenous ecosystems?
Sun was barely up and Tauhou was foraging for breakfast in the kānuka already 💚

A heavy humid day, Kōtare obviously enjoyed his lunchtime bath - he came back three times...

Kōtare are not around much at the moment, feeding away, probably at the beach, but I heard one yesterday. Instead of the vigorous chivying chi-chi-chi-chi, it was a slow chi...chi...chi ☹️
Photo from a visit to the veranda rail last year.

Blackbird is always first at the bath shortly after sunrise, but Pīwakawaka is always last, just before sunset. After gazing at his reflection, he flashes into the water so quickly, I wonder he gets wet at all 😀
