How nation-building histories sidelined Kurdish history
Across the modern Middle East, the biggest force shaping official history hasn’t been a neutral search for the past, it’s been the needs of the #nation_state.
In parts of the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, state-building projects often produced a single, central narrative: one language, one identity, one national story. In that style of history-writing, Kurds frequently appear as a side character (described as tribes, mountain communities, or local unrest) rather than as a nation with political institutions, intellectual traditions, and long historical continuity.
1) The center versus the periphery framing
A common pattern in imperial and state historiography is to write history from the capital outward. Under the Ottoman Empire, for example, Kurdish regions were often discussed through the lens of administration, taxation, and security, especially during 19th-century centralization reforms, rather than through Kurdish social and political life on its own terms. That frontier management angle can make Kurdish actors look like obstacles to order, instead of historical agents with their own goals and legitimacy.
2) Textbooks as identity factories
School curricula are one of the most powerful tools for turning a political project into common sense. In Turkey, multiple studies of history education describe long periods where Kurdish identity was denied or heavily minimized in official narratives and school materials, aligning with a broader nation-building ideology.
In Iraq, Arab nationalist approaches to education and state identity influenced how history and language were taught, and how Kurds were positioned inside the national story.
This isn’t only about leaving out dates and names. It’s also about how events are explained:
- Kurdish uprisings may be framed mainly as separatism or banditry, with little attention to the political context.
- Kurdish leaders and writers may be excluded from the list of founders and builders of the state.
- Kurdish language and place-names can be erased or replaced, making Kurdish presence feel new or secondary.
3) Language policy becomes historical invisibility
When a state restricts a language in public life, it also restricts what can become official knowledge. In Iran, research on language policy describes long-running pressure toward a single official language and constrained space for non-Persian languages, with major consequences for education and publishing.
In Turkey, even when limited Kurdish-language instruction became legally possible, reporting and expert commentary suggest access has remained uneven and politically sensitive, meaning the pipeline that creates Kurdish historians, teachers, and textbooks is still constrained.
When Kurdish isn’t fully supported in schools, universities, archives, and media, Kurdish history faces a double disadvantage:
- fewer primary sources are preserved and circulated in Kurdish
- fewer Kurdish scholars can shape mainstream historical debates inside state institutions.
4) State security narratives flatten Kurdish life
In Iraq, policies like Arabization weren’t only demographic or administrative projects; they also shaped what the state wanted citizens to believe about territory and belonging. Documentation by Human Rights Watch describes Arabization as a state policy that displaced communities and aimed to consolidate control, especially in strategic areas, policies that inevitably influence how official history talks about who belongs where.
Once Kurdish issues are treated primarily as security problems, history-writing tends to narrow:
- Kurdish cultural and intellectual history gets less space than conflict timelines.
- Kurdish contributions to state-building, trade, literature, and urban life are overshadowed.
- The public learns a problem story, not a full human story.
5) The Arab-world narrative isn’t one thing—but state nationalism has patterns
It’s important not to stereotype Arabs as a single bloc. There are Arab scholars and institutions that do serious work on Kurdish history and pluralism. But in several Arab-majority states, especially under strong ideological regimes (like the Ba'ath Party in Iraq and Syria), official narratives often emphasized a unified Arab identity, which could push Kurdish identity to the margins in education and public culture.

They may be relatively neutral on UK politics, but on #constitutional_politics they symbolise the #nation_state, and that's #UK.
