The first time I took notice of deep learning was @karpathy 's "Unreasonable Effectiveness of Recurrent Neural Networks" article: https://t.co/oQBklWPPDj The Linux source code especially, it makes you think "Could you get it to write real code if you validate against a compiler/type checker instead of just cloning a dataset?" But the second one was this lesser-known one by @alexjc : https://t.co/6yo3QI4jbL I opened it up, and "650 lines? How is that possible? Generating these images sounds really complicated. Like a 10k line program minimum. Where's all the logic?". He had it narrowly scoped for "textures in video games", and it's definitely suited for that. But I spent a month or two trying to get it to generate anime by layering complicated structure on top of it, sketches, lots of examples of styles, etc. I also thought "Someday, artists will be able to generate images from a bunch of examples of their own style, instead of painstakingly crafting them with 10 or 20 hours of work" Nowadays LLMs and Stable Diffusions and and such do everything I thought might be possible and more.
