The debate between fast #superconducting platforms and high-fidelity #trapped_ion or #Neutral_Atom platforms has persisted for years.
However, simply labeling one approach as “fast” and the other as “stable” fails to capture the true value of a quantum computer.
If gate operations are fast but the coherence time is shorter than the gate execution window, speed quickly becomes meaningless—errors dominate before useful computation can occur.
Conversely, even if coherence can be maintained for a long time, excessively slow gate operations also prevent practical performance.
To compare these fundamentally different platforms on more equal footing, this article uses the
coherence-time-to-gate-speed ratio (T₂ / t_gate) as a baseline metric.
This ratio reflects whether speed and coherence are balanced well enough to sustain meaningful computation.
By this measure, neutral-atom platforms currently exhibit the most favorable raw ratios.
However, this alone does not determine the best quantum computer.
An equally critical question is how easily and cheaply logical qubits can be constructed.
In other words, what truly matters is:
How many logical gate operations a single logical qubit can reliably execute—
including error correction—within its coherence window.
Ultimately, the quantum computers that will dominate the market are those that combine
a large coherence-to-gate ratio with a low logical-qubit cost.
If logical qubits are inexpensive and stable,
speed can be improved later through engineering, parallelization, and software optimization.
But if logical qubits remain costly and fragile,
raw gate speed becomes little more than a marketing metric, not a measure of real capability.
