WAR SHUTTER I wasn't born a photographer, nor even a photojournalist. But at 16, I discovered the magic of the darkroom, squeezing into the cramped space under our home's stairs with an old enlarger and my father's trusty #Nikkormat to master the basics. Dad was the true artist—a passionate enthusiast who could effortlessly compose the perfect geometry, seize the fleeting moment, and harness the play of light in ways I could only aspire to. Yet, that fire was kindled in me, and it's burned brightly ever since. My path to journalism came later in life. I started as an analyst, spending eight years immersed in the world of a renowned Italian think tank. #Reporting from the front lines followed, drawing me into the chaos of #Lebanon and #Afghanistan. There, my photos weren't just embellishments—they were integral to the stories, and every one found its way into print. But my style? Pure instinct. No time for fiddling with apertures, shutter speeds, or zooms; no luxury of lingering with my eye glued to the viewfinder. In those volatile environments, awareness was survival—you had to watch your surroundings, or risk becoming the headline yourself. My shots were always "stolen"—snapped in forbidden places, where a camera could mean danger. That's why I favored compact, unobtrusive gear: something small enough to cradle in my palm and conceal in an instant. Durability was non-negotiable; these cameras had to endure riots, where they might get knocked flying by a tear gas canister, or survive the jolt of leaping from a military vehicle under fire. Lenses shattered easily, especially telephotos, so I stuck to primes like 28mm or 35mm—simple, reliable focal lengths. Skip the fragile extras: no tilting screens, minimal electronics that could fail. Autofocus? A liability in the perpetual dust of the #Middle East and #North Africa.
