@NPRJoeShapiro Yes, sadly there is no shortage of stories about violence against PwD. I've been through physical & emotional, thankfully not sexual but literally every PwD I know has been abused by someone who was supposed to love and/or assist them. Every. Single. One. #NoPityDisability

@NPRJoeShapiro @meriahhudson Very true. Seems like LGBTQ and PwD are the last two groups that are OK to dismiss and not have equal rights. Both have hardworking people trying to change things, and the last 10 years esp has shown significant change, esp re LGBTQ. #NoPityDisability
@NPRJoeShapiro That's right - I think parents need help understanding that their child CAN learn self-advocacy skills in vast majority of cases, even when child has ID or communication challenges. And that #disability doesn't need to be fixed, you can still live a good life. #NoPityDisability
@tazzteacher @RebeccaCokley @PFLAG We are all experts on ourselves, If we choose to be advocates for others, we should get to know & understand diverse #disability experiences, & get education/training/experience to be taken seriously. Same as anyone w a personal connection to their career field. #NoPityDisability
@RebeccaCokley @FreeWheelinMe @PFLAG I agree. I've seen a change in the past nearly 20 years working in public schools. Attitudes are changing with parents, but too many still discount the PwD as an expert on themselves. Goes back to presuming competence & not viewing PwD as less. #NoPityDisability
@meriahhudson @NPRJoeShapiro Personal opinion: LGBTQ parents view kids as different. Not less. My kid is different but deserves same rights. Many parents and society at large still sees disability as less. Different AND less. Once we dump "less" we can have true allyship. #NoPityDisability

@FreeWheelinMe Yes! I teach little ones in special ed. My job is to educate and mentor parents as much as teaching their little ones. Presume competence. Have expectations. #NoPityDisability
A7 I would like to see more people with #disabilities reaching out to & mentoring parents so they can become true allies & see their children's potential. No need to perpetuate divisions when MOST parents love their #disabled kids & want to understand. #NoPityDisability

@meriahhudson From parents there is so much of a caretaking attitude. Part of it is because it's your kid. Part I think stems from old attitudes re disability. Many still focus on what their kids CAN'T do, or place low expectations re: disability. #NoPityDisability

@NPRJoeShapiro @meriahhudson This scares me most. So much needs to be changed about SS, Medicaid, etc. Rules are insane. We can only help PwD if we keep them living in poverty. Able to work? Must not need assistance. No help for you. No win situation...some wonder, why try? Disheartening. #NoPityDisability
@meriahhudson She did and it (along with getting to know adults with #disabilities ) completely changed her perspective & transformed her into an activist. I have 2 copies of #NoPityDisability because I inherited hers when she passed away in 1999.
