--#Ethiopia’s 2026 election is not a real democratic contest but the staging of a controlled outcome.
--This is not a real election. It is the managed appearance of choice under conditions where real political competition has already been hollowed out.
--The core problem is not only what happens on voting day. The real issue is what happens before the vote: opposition weakened, media pressured, civil society constrained, and large parts of the country trapped in insecurity.
--The warning signs were already there in 2021: the ruling party won 455 of 471 contested seats, and in Oromia alone 100+ constituencies reportedly had only one candidate. That is not democratic competition. That is political closure.

In this commentary, Wakjira Tesfaye argues that the 2021 election, in which the Prosperity Party (#PP) secured an overwhelming majority amid conflict, uncontested constituencies, and excluded regions, “was not an aberration… but a proof of concept for a mode of governance in which the formal machinery of electoral democracy is preserved while the substantive conditions that give elections their democratic content are removed.” He further notes that the upcoming 2026 election represents “the maturation of this model.”
The author contends that the conditions under which the 2026 election is being organized are “more restrictive than those that produced the 2021 result by every available measure.” Rather than directly manipulating ballots, Wakjira explains that the system eliminates the conditions necessary for genuine competition through legal restrictions on civil society, increased criminal liability for journalists, the weakening or deregistration of opposition parties, digital barriers to voter registration, and ongoing armed conflicts that make voting impossible in large parts of the country. The author emphasizes, “The problem is not procedural. It is constitutional and structural.”
The article further highlights that, under international and African legal standards, elections must be “genuine,” meaning that freedoms of expression, association, and assembly must be present. It adds that without these conditions, “the resulting process does not produce a legitimate mandate regardless of its procedural regularity.”
The author concludes that the 2026 election will likely formalize political monopoly through legal and institutional means, creating “an authoritarian consolidation that is procedurally impeccable but substantively empty of democratic content.”
