Johnson tells the court that whole-life orders should be for "exceptionally serious cases". He suggests factors in this case should mean a sentence short of a whole life order. Johnson KC, defending, reminds the court Jamie Varley was a former teacher at South Shore Academy in Blackpool. He says his client was "brilliant in his pastoral role and with his students and delayed his adoption to be with his students". Varley’s submissions are brief, with his lawyer asking the judge to consider a minimum term rather than a whole life order. John McGowan-Fazakerley, says the multiplicity of offending may lead the court to the very high culpability bracket. He says the offending relating to failing to protect Preston and remove him from harm contrasts with the evidence of a hard working, intelligent man who entered into the adoption without premeditation of physical or sexual abuse. Social workers took steps to carry out checks and ensure the adoption process was carried out properly. Steps were being taken to improve living standards by moving to a new home. The judge is now rising and says he will "take his time" to consider the sentence. In broad terms he says it will likely take him about an hour before he comes back. He has now adjourned the hearing.
