•The cult of Baal Hammon / African Saturn is concentrated in eastern #Numidian lands and #Carthage’s territory (northeast Tunisia).
•It is mostly absent from #Gaetulian regions and the western #Numidian/#Mauritanian kingdoms, aside from a few coastal and military sites.
Key insights:
•The cult grew most after Carthage’s fall in 146 BCE, i.e. under early Roman rule. Its spread may represent a non-conformist assertion of identity, an “invention of tradition” in response to imperial pressures.
•Its limited adoption may be linked to its most controversial practice: child sacrifice—a heavy demand that may have discouraged broader spread.
•Other groups (#Gaetulians, #Mauri) had different ways of negotiating with chthonic gods, without such extreme rituals.
