📝Optimism Superchain Overview
In 2023, @optimismFND introduced to their community the OP Stack, allowing developers to build #Layer2 platforms with customizations.
➔ These platforms, called OP Chains, form the Superchain ecosystem.
Currently, OP Stack stands out as one of the most flexible Layer 2 construction frameworks available in the market.
It offers a wide range of customizable options, including:
∙ Data Availability
∙ Consensus Layer
∙ Execution Layer
∙ Proof
∙ Sequencer
Due to its high level of customization, numerous large companies have opted for the OP Stack to construct their own Layer 2 platform.
🏆 Superchain's initial achievements.
OP Stack swiftly gained significant traction within the Crypto community due to the following developments:
∙ Coinbase's decision to construct #Base, an Optimistic Rollup platform on #Ethereum using OP Stack.
∙ #Binance's choice of OP Stack for building opBNB.
∙ #A16Z's development of a Client product in the Superchain ecosystem.
∙ #Celo's transition from a Layer 1 platform to Layer 2 on Ethereum, utilizing OP Stack technology.
∙Many projects are now adopting Optimism's OP Stack to build their Layer2 (#Debank, #Worldcoin, #Metis, #Aevo, etc)
➔ This demonstrates the prowess of the Optimism development team in terms of both technology and network.
➔ I firmly believe that this is only the start of an even more dynamic Superchain ecosystem in the future.
However, it is important to note that there is no 'holy grail' model in the crypto market, and Superchain itself still has its vulnerabilities.
❌Tokenomics is a fatal weakness
Superchain closely resembles #Cosmos' pioneering vision of the Internet of Blockchain.
Examples include:
∙ OP Stack, similar to Cosmos SDK.
∙ Optimism as the initial OP Chain, with Cosmos Hub as the central Hub.
∙ IBC as a cross-chain bridge, hinting at future interoperability between OP Chains.
The Cosmos model has a weakness: $ATOM, its native token, fails to capture significant value despite rapid development and outperforming competitors like #Polkadot and #Avalanche.
Previously, staking ATOM had benefits like receiving airdrops from Cosmos SDK projects, but the program lost attraction due to increased staking requirements and reduced rewards.
Cosmos addressed tokenomics issues with a lengthy proposal, but it wasn't approved.
Instead, the proposal was broken down into smaller ones for gradual adoption. Cosmos also updated Interchain Security.
Interchain Security allows new blockchains to rent security from Cosmos Hub, eliminating the need to allocate resources for network security.
➔ This is positive for ATOM.
Network security and decentralization are crucial but costly for Blockchain platform development.
Interchain Security is needed when multiple Cosmos Blockchains use this service, increasing revenue for Validators on Cosmos Hub.
This has led to a desire for more Validators, requiring the acquisition of ATOM tokens.
The demand for ATOM as a result makes it an important asset to buy.
The flywheel shows that as the Cosmos network grows, the demand for Interchain Security increases, driving long-term growth for ATOM.
🤔 On the other hand, how about Optimism story?
Will it prioritize developing technology and networks like Cosmos before addressing Tokenomics?
Currently, the developers on the OP Stack are not responsible for capturing value operations.
So far, we have observed 2 key highlights:
1. Base commits to deduct revenue for Optimism Collective, but doesn't directly impact the OP.
2. OP Stack lets OP Chain platforms use Optimism's Sequencer suite, similar to Cosmos' Interchain Security, creating a flywheel effect.
➔ In my opinion, OP should aim for greater value from Superchain.
➔ Optimism community will likely find solutions to address this issue.
There are also rumours of future airdrops for OP stakers similar to holding ATOM on Cosmos.
🎲 Unclear how OP Chains interact in Optimism's Superchain.
Optimism hasn't provided details on Op Chains' interaction and information exchange, unlike IBC on Cosmos.
To address liquidity fragmentation, the team is considering a bridge across Omnichain.
Currently, OP Chains may need to rely on third-party bridges like @StargateFinance, @lifiprotocol, @Orbiter_Finance, or @hashflow, which come with hidden risks.
🛠 Superchain is Still in Development
Currently, Superchain is in the early stages of testing and development.
While it follows a similar model to Cosmos, the success and safety of Cosmos do not guarantee the same for Optimism's Superchain during this early phase.
Even Base encountered some bugs in its first Testnet.
As a result, OP Chains still carry certain risks in the future. However, these risks are expected to decrease over time as the number of OP Chains increases.
🔐 Superchain Depends on Optimism
By building on the OP Stack, developers can enjoy the advantage of not needing to concern themselves with network upgrades, as Optimism handles that aspect.
However, this reliance can sometimes result in developers lacking initiative when it comes to network development and customization to meet their unique requirements.
🙎Conclusion
Besides the great potential of Superchain, we still see certain disadvantages of Superchain that need to be improved and overcome in the future.
