This quaint village is embraced by the Panchachuli Peaks and is situated around 280 km, or a 10-12 hour drive, from Kathgodam Railway Station in Kumaon. Our writer experienced nature, local hospitality, and trekking trails and had the opportunity to stay in a woman-run homestay, experiencing their eco-tourism practices for which Munsiyari is renowned.
In her words, Himakshi describes the village entrance as being graced by a magnificent century-old Deodar tree. Its tall appearance is a testament to its heritage-like grandeur, shining bright in shades of brown and green. The meticulous division between the location of homestays and typical households makes it easy for visitors to navigate.
Her experience at these rustic homes (run by Maati Sangathan) took her into the day of a rural woman, who hosted her with Pahadi flavours over meals like Paturi (leaf fritters/ steamed cakes), Bhujji (a concoction of wild greens), Mandwa Roti (Ragi) and soups like Bhangira (hump seed). She was reminded that a hotel could never suffice the comfort of a home.
She mentions that spending time at these mountain houses introduces you to a minimalist lifestyle. The warmth of the people over food, conversations, and dance completes the experience. Birds like the Black Jay and Flycatcher add to the charm of this picturesque place, making it a haven for birdwatchers.
Himakshi completed her journey with a piping hot bowl of "Pahadon Wali Maggi" and a picture-perfect click amidst the five snow-clad Himalayan peaks (Panchachuli) radiating even brighter in the evening.
