Great tour - so much of the material culture, architecture and sense of place remain @ArmaghPlanet, plus I'm always happy to find myself on an observatory roof with like-minded folk! #ObsNet4 @ObservatoryNet
Wonderful tour of Armagh Observatory and collections for @ObservatoryNet delegates and now discussion about preserving heritage and reconnecting astronomy networks in Ireland to do this as part of Universal Value #ObsNet4 #StayCurious

Session 7 of #ObsNet4 is on Sustaining historic instruments and observatory environments. Prof Michael Burton is starting this session highlighting AOPs plans for UNESCO World Heritage alongside @DIASDunsink and @BirrCastle #staycurious @ObservatoryNet

After fantastic tours, taking in the telescope domes, object store, rare books, library & Astropark, we're turning to a panel session on how historic observatory sites can and have been sustained by gaining official heritage status, joining forces and meeting challenges #ObsNet4
An acknowledgement in discussion that Jim Bennett's 1990 book, Church, State and Astronomy in Ireland: 200 Years of Armagh Observatory, "is their bible" #ObsNet4
Final talk of the AOP in Focus Session is by Matthew who is talking about the importance of our Oral History project. With such a wealth of former staff we have an untapped bounty of information! #ObsNet4 #staycurious @ObservatoryNet

Un buen consejo para exhibiciones:

Our own Dr Rok Nežič is now speaking on how you blend history and science together to make our Legendary Telescopes Tour! @RokNezic @ObservatoryNet #ObsNet4 #staycurious

Rok Nezic, Tours & Outreach Manager, now addressing further the question of how to blend history and science for @ArmaghPlanet audiences. The challenges of historic sites are familiar - small spaces, clashing priorities of use, accessibility difficult etc #ObsNet4
Aaron Black has provided further background on the buildings and setting of the Observatory, and now Heather Alexander is telling the more recent history of the Planetarium and associated exhibitions. Connections to TV and the Smithsonian shaped tone & content #ObsNet4

Michael Burton, Director @ArmaghPlanet, notes that they are funded to do astronomy and education and not heritage - a common theme that came up yesterday. Nevertheless, they do explore and care for their history and heritage and manage to get some financial support #ObsNet4
AOP has many synergies with @sydneyobs @maasmuseum in its collection and work in astronomy, timekeeping and meteorology. There are wonderful collections - Earnshaw 1 and 2 regulators and it’s establishment was as an observatory ‘for ever’. Fantastic start to #ObsNet4 #StayCurious

Day 2 is kicking off with Armagh Observatory and Planetarium in Focus for #ObsNet4. Our Director, Prof Michael Burton is giving the opening talk and an introduction to AOP. @ObservatoryNet #staycurious

Historians can add context - drawing on archives to explore technical issues and choices, specificities of instruments/makers etc as well as the wider perspectives of e.g. military funding/objectives and colonial context in which the work was done #ObsNet4
