Born on 8 June 1936 in Massachusetts, Wilson developed an early passion for mathematics and physics. He went on to study at Harvard University and earned his PhD at Caltech under renowned physicist Murray Gell-Mann.
By the 1960s, physicists faced a major challenge: understanding what happens when materials undergo phase transitions, such as water boiling into steam or magnets losing their magnetism.

彼が発明した「捻り天秤」を用いて,
帯電した物体間に働く力を測定し,
【クーロンの法則】を発見‼️
電荷の単位「クーロン」[C]は彼の名に因む。
クーロンはフランス・アングレームの裕福な家庭に生まれた。
父アンリ・クーロン(Henri Coulomb)はモンペリエの役人であり,母Catherine Bajetは羊毛交易で財を成した名家の出であった。
少年時代,一家はパリに移住し,パリの名門校Collège des Quatre-Nationsにて学んだ。
そこでPierre Charles Monnierの数学の授業を受け,数学&数学に関連した分野に進むことを決意。
電荷の間に働く力は距離の2乗に反比例する事を発見。

「クーロンの法則」と呼ばれる。
1773年,土圧理論を提唱。
クーロン土圧は,現在でも土木工学・土質工学系の分野で一般的に用いられている。
1774年には科学アカデミーの通信会員。
1777年磁気コンパスの研究により科学アカデミーの懸賞第一位に。
1781年,摩擦の研究により再び懸賞第一位を獲得。
同年,科学アカデミー会員に選出された。
1781年,最終任地としてパリに配属。
1789年,フランス革命の勃発に伴い辞職し,ブロワにて隠遁生活。
その後,革命政府による新しい度量衡の制定のためパリに呼び戻された。
1801年,フランス学士院会長。
1802年,社会教育長官。
その頃既にに彼の健康状態は悪化しており,4年後の1806年,パリにて死去。

#OnThisDay March 5, 1827, the world lost Alessandro Volta, the physicist who gave humanity its first continuous source of electricity — the electric battery.
His discovery didn’t just power experiments… it powered the future of modern technology.
Before Volta, scientists could only produce brief sparks of electricity using static machines.
Experiments were limited, unpredictable, and short-lived.
Volta changed that forever.
In 1800, Volta invented the Voltaic Pile — the world’s first true battery.
It was made by stacking alternating discs of:
- Zinc
- Copper
- Brine-soaked cloth
This simple stack produced continuous electric current for the first time in history.
Volta’s battery was revolutionary.
For the first time, scientists could run controlled electrical experiments for long periods.
This single invention opened the door to:
- Electrochemistry
- Electrical engineering
- Modern electronics
Volta’s work also settled a scientific debate.
Another scientist, Luigi Galvani, believed electricity came from animal tissues.
Volta proved the current actually came from chemical reactions between metals.
His discovery was so influential that the unit of electric potential was named after him.
Yes — every time we say volt, we are honoring Alessandro Volta.
In recognition of his work, Napoleon Bonaparte personally honored Volta and made him a count.
Few scientists in history received such recognition during their lifetime.
Today, every battery — from a smartphone to an electric car — traces its lineage back to Volta’s simple stack of metal discs.
A humble invention that electrified the world.

Today is the birthday of French mathematician and political activist Évariste Galois.
His most profound work was written at age 18, and died in a duel at age 20.
He answered a long-standing and widely-studied unsolved question: he showed that there is no general formula for finding the roots of a polynomial of degree 5 or higher.
He found a deep connection between two areas of mathematics: in this case, group theory and field theory.
In so doing, he created new areas of mathematics that opened doors for generations of researchers.
Just think what he might have accomplished if he had lived.
