Still doubting how good is openpilot?
So, do I need a C3X to run openpilot or I can also use an off the shelf phone?
Yes and no, there are a couple of quirks, since an #openpilot fork is not maintained by @comma_ai but by the maintainer(s) of the fork, so, usually:
- it's not latest openpilot, but usually older code
- it doesn't support the latest driving models
- it doesn't support the latest cars added recently (e.g. Rivian, Teslas, etc.)
- most forks are far from being tested as good as official openpilot
- unofficial hardware can't upload the driving data (for training or for seeing the recordings)
- a phone will get hot, since it doesn't have any active cooling (like the comma products)
- comma is not selling the black panda anymore (out of stock, but this might change)
