#PCAMChat24 A4: #PancreaticCancer is a complex disease and there is no one laboratory or investigator that will necessarily have all the expertise or reagents needed for tackling a research question. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of patients with pancreatic cancer are either offered clinical trials or are eligible for trials. This requires a model where institutions work together to rapidly make therapeutic advances in this disease. Another practical reason for collaboration is access to tissues, which is always a challenge in this disease. Finally, it is just FUN to collaborate so w ecan mke advances against this terrible disease, and all of us on this chat DO enjoy working together with each other.
@NCICancerBio A4: It’s important to bring together diverse perspectives in collaborative teams to tackle the complexities of the dynamic #PancreaticCancer ecosystem. Different experts working together are needed to develop effective prevention, detection, and treatment strategies. #PCAMChat24
@NCICancerBio @CukiermanLab @greenberg 3/3 information and databases, collaboration is the key to groundbreaking discoveries. Let's join forces for a brighter future in pancreatic cancer research! 💡🤝 #PCAMChat24 #CancerResearch #ItTakesAVillage
@NCICancerBio A3: Allowing my fellow panelists to focus on clinical advances, preclinical studies using single-cell analyses have truly redefined what we thought we knew about heterogeneity and the depth of different cells that contribute to tumorigenesis and disease maintenance #PCAMChat24
#PCAMChat24 A3: There has also been a lot of clinical activity in the sphere of preventing #PancreaticCancer from coming back (recurring) after surgery. There are two early phase #vaccine trials that have now been conducted that demonstrate promise in patients who have undergone successful surgery, and both trials are now going larger scale validation studies. One exciting area is the possibility of using vaccines or other immunological approaches to prevent pancreatic cancer from occurring in the first place (a.k.a. "cancer interception"). The 1st proof of concept vaccine trial in high risk individuals has now been completed, and it will be exciting to see where the field proceeds from here.

@NCICancerBio Q4: Pancreatic cancer is a highly complex problem. Collaboration allows us to apply diverse, interdisciplinary expertise (incl scientists and clinicians across fields) to think about this disease in new, potentially impactful ways #PCAMChat24
@NCICancerBio A3: @TheVinodLab et al. developed a “personalized mRNA vaccine against #PancreaticCancer that created a strong anti-tumor immune response in half the participants of a small study.” https://t.co/8P6jd3dXwl #PCAMChat24
@NCICancerBio A1: I became involved in pancreatic cancer during my PhD with @HCCvPDAC and stayed with it during my postdoctoral training with @Pasca_Lab and @LyssiotisLab. Nearly 15 years later, my primary focus remains pancreatic cancer until we finally achieve a breakthrough #PCAMChat24
@NCICancerBio A3: Using 3D models and a tunable biomaterial, @HeilshornSarah et al. found that treatment resistance induced by a stiff #tumormicroenvironment could be reversed by transferring #PancreaticCancer cells to a less stiff environment. https://t.co/u8UMVavhop #PCAMChat24
#PCAMChat24 A3: From a clinical/translational standpoint, we finally have drugs that can target KRAS in #PancreaticCancer. This gene is abnormal in >90% of cases, and it has taken four decades since the original discovery tofinally have a slew of drugs in the pipeline that can block aberrant KRAS function in patients. However, we also know that these drugs in and of themselves will not be effective and so a lot of preclinical (a.k.a. laboratory based, in experimental models) studies are ongoing looking at effective combinations that can sustain responses longer in patients, while ameliorating toxicities.
5/5 and improving patient outcomes.
